Anime Review: KOTOURA-SAN, Episodes 1-4

Recap: After recovering from her shocking vision, Haruka and the ESP club learn someone is attacking High School girls around the area. Despite her apprehension, the group considers taking further action. How in the world could they possibly jump from serious drama to romantic comedy to crime mystery??? Needless to say, I was relieved to see cooler heads prevail as the ESP club left the matter to the police for now. Having the kids go out to find the attacker would have really hurt the perfect balance of fantasy and plausibility the show has going for it.

Fortunately this meant more incredibly adorable scenes with Haruka and Manabe, particularly the entire stretch where she asks him to stay at her apartment. Even Haruka herself mentions they never formally confessed, but hey, whatever happens, happens right? Cute romance is pretty much par for the course though, so of more interest was Haruka encountering her mother for presumably the first time since she left.

Once again these writers seem unable to do wrong as the scene never exploded into the melodramatic, tear soaked shouting match I would have totally expected from lesser shows. There was even a glimmer of possible redemption for her mother. I might have a hard time accepting that right now, but I felt that way about Moritani and that seemed to work out. After seeing how this episode panned out though, I will just shut my mouth there and wait to see what happens next week.

Accidental Visits By Others

Three episodes have passed, allowing more than enough time for Kotoura-san to at least show off some of its stuff. First, Kotoura is an admirable character for not brandishing her powers against Moritani. Whether or not she actually hates Moritani at this point is irrelevant—what matters is that Kotoura consciously refuses to exact a revenge against the people who antagonize her. This naturally leads to the second positive message: Moritani finally sees Kotoura as a person, except not just as a person.

See a recent post on Tumblr from @mymindbrand about kotoura san. but the show makes up for it in fantastic characters, fight scenes, and dialogue.

Sistas McNealey — Kotoura-san Limousine Scene from Episode 6

Anyway, she is Kotoura-san. She looks cute and her smile is brilliant. This scene is the first day of her going to school and she is filled with happiniess. However, she faces many obstacles because of her reading-mind ability. You know, going to school, you meet many people, which means crucial for her. Not only her frineds but also her parents feel strange and horrible to Kotoura-san, especially her mother gets crazy. Before she gets crazy, she takes Kotoura-san to hospitals to see if she is strange or not, taking her to temples to purify her, but all things are vain efforts, so she drinks too much to forget everything.

Kotoura-san episode 9 *spoilers*

Kotoura-san is based on a four-panel manga series, which makes the fact that it actually turns out to be a character development-driven dramedy all the more surprising. The anime version wastes no time in clarifying that it is not going to be just a full-out comedy fest, as its first 10 minutes are grimly dramatic, and despite occasional infusions of silliness, a serious tone continues to dominate for the first four episodes. The rest of the series alternates between silly and serious stretches, and despite an occasional stumble along the way, it finds a remarkably comfortable balance between the two elements. That helps make it one of its season's unexpected gems. The most controversial part of the series is its opening 10 minutes, a montage which carefully delineates exactly how Kotoura ends up as the shut-off, dead-eyed girl who we see when she first encounters Manabe.

I suspect there was an expectation that this would be a fringy series, with minimal sales and not a lot of attention, and the plan was to cram as much into 12 episodes as possible and boost the manga sales. In spite of those not insignificant flaws this is still an exceptionally interesting series whose virtues far outweigh them. Oshou is a compassionate fellow himself, and became interested in ESP after seeing what this strange little girl could do. This gives him a connection with the kids, who quickly realize that Kotoura has been there before , and he agrees to introduce them to Zenzou-san at his gargantuan estate. This sequence is the two sides of Kotoura-san and the two sides of Manabe-kun in all their glory — sentimental and warm yet also wholly realistic about the human animal.

Kotoura-san 11 – And The Culprit Is…

Kotouta-san is a show I picked up completely randomly, only because it was on Crunchyroll, and I felt like picking something random up. As of now, it looks like a solid 4, decent, but not mind-blowing no fucking way is this a 4. Still a solid show though. This scene was really funny when I watched it, but now it only serves as a way to explain this anime as a whole.

Haruka Kotoura was born with the power to read people's thoughts. Unfortunately, she also has a habit of blurting out said thoughts, making her an outcast both in school and even to her parents, being abandoned by both. Living on her own now, she starts high school depressed and cynical, avoiding contact with everyone. That is, until a nice but perverted boy named Yoshihisa Manabe gets her to open up, using her mind reading to tease her, thinking of her in perverse situations.

Yes you did just watch a rather bad episode of Kotoura-san. As it ventured into the land of excessive and not very good drama, a fury of face-palms ensued.

Today we are doing another episode review, taking a deeper look at why my favorite episode of Kotoura-San is in my opinion an execeptional work of storytelling. So when it comes to what kind of role I play in the larger scheme of things…. The opening to Kotoura-San is simply incredible. Besides for the melancholic color scheme that is very common to open an anime with, we get a pattern of pedestrians walking that is interrupted by the formation of a empty space with one person centered in the middle. The truth of the matter is unwanted attention and knowing how despised you are to some is an understandably terrible feeling. A important aspect that is very crucial to why I find Kotoura-San tragic backstory so… well tragic is because Kotoura has to fuck up her life at an early age.

Since childhood, Haruka Kotoura's classmates have seen her as a creepy and monstrous person. This is due to her ability to read other people's minds—the same ability that drove her parents away, leaving her alone with her grandfather. As a result, she has grown accustomed to the bitter treatment by the people around her, becoming completely cold and unsociable to others. However, everything starts to change when Haruka transfers to a new school.
