In the late s, a colony of tanuki are threatened by the construction of New Tama, a suburb of Tokyo in the Tama Hills. Thirty years later and the plight of the tanuki is becoming increasingly desperate. Food supplies are dwindling, land is in short supply and the animals have started fighting among themselves over increasingly scarce resources. Urged by matriarch Oroku Nijiko Kiyokawa in the original, Tress MacNeille in the English language version to co-operate instead of fighting among themselves, the tanuki band together to try to stop further encroachment on their land. But nothing scares the humans off and the tanuki put out a call for help from their elders who are able to change shape and assume the form of humans, something that has rather been lost among the tanuki.

Originally posted May 16th, One of the things that makes Studio Ghibli so successful — in my opinion — is the way they use creative storytelling to express universal morals. Specifically, how land development and deforestation ruins the lives of animals. The story begins in s Japan on the outskirts of Tokyo. Major suburban development has been cutting into large sections of the forest, forcing many animals from their homes. By the early s, tribes of shape-shifting raccoons are fighting each other in a war over food and territory.

He is hotheaded and pugnacious. His wife is Otama, a docile, doting tanuki who worries about him constantly but is strong enough to fend off his attempts to woo her. He was reportedly modeled on Hayao Miyazaki and his strict directing style. Gonta's story begins when he's going into battle with Seizaemon. His battle is interrupted by Oroku, who arrives to tell the Red and Blue armies that their forest home is being destroyed. Soon, the tanuki gather at Manpuku Temple and set out a five-year plan. Unfortunately, Gonta and the others don't listen to all of it and get distracted by catering.

Even in montages of various Ghibli movies, Pom Poko is pretty much relegated to one notable scene: a comical battle between two warring tribes of tanuki Japanese raccoon dogs , which happens to be one of the very first scenes in the film. The rest of the movie was a mystery to me, so I was quite curious to see the rest of the story. From the humorous battle scene on, the film often plays like a mythological nature documentary, explaining the many eccentricities of tanuki pulled straight from Japanese legend: their mischievous antics, shapeshifting abilities, penchant for parties, belly drumming, and…um, their prominent testicles. Yeah, more than anything else, that last point is probably why Pom Poko never hit it off in America. Just writing this feels bizarre, but hey, myths can be weird, especially considering raccoon dogs are a real species.

In North America, those raccoons are just furry mammals that make messes in our garbage cans. As they can have rabies, come out mostly at night, we have to be careful of them. In Japan, those raccoons are okay, only different. Out in the streets, they are just raccoons. But out in the forest outside of Tokyo, where no human can find them, they are bigger, furrier, as they live in their own civilization. They are what they call in Japanese folklore, Japanese raccoon dogs. They even talk like humans, as they have the power to shape shift.

Pom Poko. Isao Takahata does not shy away from complicated movies with tough endings. His Grave of the Fireflies is arguably the most powerfully sad war movie ever made, and his recent The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a slice of sweet melancholy. Pom Poko would appear to promise something a little more upbeat, being a tale of clever raccoon dogs causing mischief in the human world, the better to derail their pesky, encroaching construction projects.
Studio Ghibli Fest is coming back for a return engagement in theaters - and this time you might be able to catch some of the more obscure and fantastical creations to come out of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki's operation.
