In fact, the Cardiff-born writer didn't even enjoy the Gene Wilder-starring Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory , a film which still effortlessly embeds smiles on the faces of families with every new viewing. Since his passing in , a diverse range of directors - filmmakers bearing their own unique stamp - have taken Dahl's beloved material and attempted to turn it into a hit: Nicolas Roeg, Henry Selick, Wes Anderson to name a few. Which leads to the thought that maybe Dahl was right; if Spielberg can't do it, who can? The BFG is nothing if not a magical, so when it came to adapting Roald Dahl's children's book into a live action film, it makes sense that director Steven Spielberg needed a little CGI magic to bring the story to life. There's a reason The BFG hasn't been made into a live action movie — and that reason is named giants. Visual gags and distorted perceptions, like those used to make the hobbits look small in The Lord of the Rings series, can only work for so long. And something tells me the height ratio of giants to humans is much larger than that of humans to hobbits. The answer, it seems, lies somewhere in between.

The combination of the leading VFX team and the industry legend Steven Spielberg made this a truely magical project to be a part of. Most of the performances in the film were all based off a performance capture taken from the lead actors wearing suits and face cameras, then polished by the animation artists. Most shots were a full CG environment which meant I animated the camera in most of my shots. Spielberg brought a wonderful sense of magic to the film as a whole and some of the shots are simply beautiful. This film was very unique for a VFX project with a lot of long length of shots which I really enjoyed.
