I will be working on a Chronological game order at some point, however I do believe that the release order is most likely the best way to play them anyway.. We tried to compile a complete list so please let us know if we are missing any and we will get them added right away! We did not include the handheld games here and we will have those in another post. Thanks for stopping by and come back soon! Give us a follow on Twitter , or a like on Facebook!

The Dragon Ball franchise has always had an intimate relationship with video games , particularly the RPG genre. In practice, however, Kakarot cuts about as many corners as the average DBZ fighter. Kakarot may not have lived up to its own hype, but there are plenty of Dragon Ball games that surpass the action RPG. Adapting the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and the Saiyan arc with plenty of welcome filler in-between, Attack of the Saiyans is one of the best Dragon Ball games, period. This might have something to do with the fact that Attack of the Saiyans is a fully fleshed out RPG by Monolith Soft, the same development studio behind the Xenoverse series.

Every playable character has customizable stats and the script follows the manga as closely as possible to deliver a fresh reimagining of Dragon Ball at its best. Any characters who survive the Saiyan invasion other than Piccolo who has to die, are allowed to go to Namek, where their deaths will be permanent. The game is grindy, has poor combat mechanics, and even worse level design accompanied by an exhausting score.

Considering its sheer quality, it certainly deserves it. Certain scenes are omitted, of course, but Legendary Super Warriors treats its source material with a considerable amount of respect. Legendary Super Warriors notably adapted the Buu arc before it even finished airing in the United States. Rather than being a traditional fighter, The Legend is as close to a Dragon Ball simulator as games coming, replicating climactic battles to scale and often taking quite a bit of time to fight through.

Like earlier Dragon Ball games, The Legend allows for some narrative divergences during combat. This time around, however, players can trigger cutscenes from characters on the sideline, moving the story along through the action— much like the manga itself. The Legend is very much an acquired taste, but one every Dragon Ball fan should try at least once. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 is often considered one of the best fighting games in the franchise and for good reason: Dragon Universe.

While the story is told in a segmented manner, this simply allows Budokai 3 to fill in more detail than it otherwise would have been able to. Even better, RPG elements and a leveling system ensure that each run through Dragon Universe has its own sense of progression while also encouraging replay value— especially since some campaigns have their own secret bosses and unlockables.

After Budokai Tenkaichi disappointing story mode, Budokai Tenkaichi 2 course corrected things by essentially lifting Dragon Universe from Budokai 3 and redoing it. This time around, however, Budokai Tenkaichi 2 adapts everything in chronological order while also going much further than Dragon Universe— veering into GT territory. The combat has also been refined to feature greater player customization through the Potara system. It all comes together into a game that emulates the Dragon Ball Z anime better than most.

Kakarot should be better than Xenoverse by all accounts— taking the familiar gameplay loop and placing it into a proper action RPG— but the end result is a game that has little identity of its own. The Xenoverse foundation works best where it belongs: in a hybrid MMORPG fighting game that adapts as much of the franchise as it can in the absolute strangest way possible. Xenoverse is basically its own sub-series at this point, with Xenoverse 2 upping the roster considerably and greatly improving the game.

The following is a list of video games based on the Dragon Ball manga by Akira Toriyama.

Note that this list only includes Dragon Ball games that received official localizations. As an original character enlisted to help save the Dragon Ball universe from a new threat, players must construct a deck from cards based on thousands of different dragon ball characters and attacks from across the series and its spin-offs. There is almost an endless number of combinations and strategies to test out, and the game takes on an air of a fanfiction brought to life in the best way possible. Admittedly, there are some issues with the game. This includes his first meetings with Bulma, Yamaha and several other key characters, all adapted in polygonal 3D cutscenes. For every segment that sees players mashing the attack button, there are just as many that utilize the mic and touchpad for special attacks, puzzles and more. Though it may have once been the best-known line of Dragon Ball games out there, the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai series only accomplished the feat thanks to how good the first entry was.
