Inki is an animated cartoon character in the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons. Inki is a cute little African boy who usually dresses in a simple loincloth , armband, legband, earrings, and a bone through his hair. He never speaks, and his usual pastime seems to be hunting jungle creatures. The character's look was designed by Disney veteran Charlie Thorson. The plot of the cartoon focuses on little Inki out hunting, oblivous to the fact that he is being hunted himself by a hungry lion.

Inki and the Minah Bird (1943)
Inki is the lead character in an animated cartoon series of Warner Bros. Five Inki cartoons were made between and Inki, created for Warner Bros. He never speaks. The character's pickaninny look was designed by Disney veteran Charlie Thorson. Also central to the series is a minimalist and expressionless mynah bird , spelled "minah bird" in the title of the third short.
The mynah bird, shown as nearly almighty, appears randomly in the films, always intervening against the other characters. Occasionally, the bird's intervention benefits Inki by stopping Inki's pursuers. Inki then tries to thank the bird, but the latter ends up being disrespectful to Inki, too. He does not talk at all, and is droopy eyed almost all the time. The Minah Bird made a cameo appearance in the Animaniacs episode "Bad Mood Bobby" in a pet shop when he kicks The Goodfeathers away in retaliation for the insults against him when they make fun of him in order to cheer up Bobby.
Comics historian Don Markstein wrote that the character's racial stereotype "led to [the series'] unpopularity with program directors and thence to its present-day obscurity. He had no understanding of what the bird was supposed to do other than walk around. He serves as a symbol of all humanity, "frustrated and rescued by the wonderfully inexplicable". The Blog of Less Renown, celebrating under-appreciated unusual, unique, sick or strange Singers, Songwriters and Songs. Some seventy years ago, "Inki and the Minah Bird" was received well enough to sputter a few sequels, years apart, before being abandoned entirely in favor of the more popular Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck stuff. Nothing remotely as baffling, intellectual or mysteriously appealing would come out of the Warners cartoon mill till "One Froggy Evening" many years later. That one, ironically, was also memorable in part for the music, including the original 20's-flavored song "Michigan Rag.

This time the little black bird has a new reality- defying way to disappear: he hops into a haystack which gradually and with the same catchy hip-hop shrinks down to a single straw, which vanishes. The Inki series of Looney Tunes directed by Chuck Jones now look a little problematic, with their central character of a stereotypical little black cannibal with a bone through his head and a need to fire arrows at all birds and animals. However, if you treat it at face value then you can enjoy the strutting minah bird who always gets the better of everyone , the miserable lion who misses his steak, loses his teeth, and has a roar more effective than his bite. I particularly like the opening sequences, where a caterpillar and later a butterfly are the targets of Inki's attentions, and manage to escape with honours. It is considered rascst by today's standards which is such a shame because it features gorgeous animation with brilliant music of the era.
