But, how did it all happen? A good place to start is to look at how the studio was doing before its animated classic Cinderella was released. This required Walt to make his next picture, Dumbo , with a shorter running time and on a much smaller budget. Knowing he needed to make a drastic change, Walt decided to take a huge risk and make another full-length animated film.

The significance and legacy of the treasured Disney animated feature Cinderella are indisputable. In fact, Walt produced an animated version of Cinderella for his first animation studio, Laugh-O-grams, in Kansas City in , a year before he moved to Hollywood. The black and white cartoon short set the classic story of Cinderella in the contemporary times of s. Then in the s, the Disney studio returned to the story of Cinderella and began work on a new adaptation as a part of the Silly Symphonies series. Following the success of Snow White, a number of animated films and package features produced disappointing box office returns, and the studio desperately needed to regain its footing as a successful cartoon production house. The art and storytelling of animated films was forced to adapt with the changing times. Producing a costly, time-consuming animated feature seemed riskier than ever. As of the late s, a number of adaptations of classic stories had been in development for years, including a few that had been interrupted by the impact of World War II. In addition, the characters in Cinderella seemed more appealing than the comparatively colder characters found in the other two projects. The studio pulled out all the stops to ensure the success of the film.

The cute Disney animal sidekicks , always present, here for the first time overstep their bounds into the main plot. Some reviews, looking for something to praise in the animation, have pointed to a few more interesting visual moments like the soap bubble reflections, but Disney had already done this sort of thing, and done it better, in the likes of Dumbo and Fantasia. Which is not to say that Cinderella is visually uninteresting. The character design and animation may be unremarkable, but what is most worthy of note is the background art. These fairy-tale spaces leave a lasting impression on the imagination, evoking as they do the timeless world of Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, and Hans Christian Anderson. Certainly glass, besides being a more exotic material, suggests a more exacting point of reference in a shoe that could be worn by only one foot in the kingdom. Of course there is only one logical response to this eventuality — and Cinderella provides it, offering a satisfying twist on the Cinderella story and a clever denouement to the film.
