Toggle navigation Menu. Ride Your Wave By this point, I think that no more evidence is necessary that Yuasa Masaaki is the most important animation director working in the world right now. But his fourth feature, Ride Your Wave , provides that evidence anyway. It's not that it's his best work: I would, in fact, rank it third among those four features, and that's without even touching on any of his superb television series. But that's kind of exactly the point: this is, by Yuasa's standards, a bit simple, a bit predictable, and a bit trite, and it's still one of the best animated features I can possibly imagine seeing this calendar year.

By that point, young professionals Hinako and Minato have met, gone surfing together, and started dating. All of which puts them worlds past 95 percent of anime characters, who rarely get very far past the first hurdle of admitting their love to each other — if they can even do that.

While his more recent works, like Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! His projects are intensely energized, with rushing action and rubber-band characters whose manic physical distortions make them feel subjective, startling, and unfamiliar. Those elements do eventually arise in Ride Your Wave. Ride Your Wave is fueled by romance, painful emotions, complex and contradictory urges, and one big, thrilling action sequence.

But she lives in chaos and a bit of limbo, with most of her possessions in teetering towers of unpacked boxes up to the ceiling. And when a crisis hits, her response is disorganized and dangerous.

Minato, by contrast, seems almost unbearably smooth and capable, and he enters her life literally as a glowing, smiling hero. But the fall inevitably comes, and it leaves Hinako traumatized and trying to process emotions that seem too vast and all-encompassing for such an early stage of life. Lu Over the Wall screenwriter Reiko Yoshida excels at exploring the ways even a dedicated, loving support system of friends and family can just leave a trauma victim feeling guilty for not healing faster.

And Ride Your Wave makes grief feel palpable and overwhelming, both a natural response to change and an agonizing one. But the film never fully loses track of its own tragedies.

Hinako achieves a level of peace with what happened to her relationship, but Yuasa and Yoshida periodically pull back to see her as other people see her — obsessive, possibly delusional, possibly dangerous to herself. Even so, the journey to that bittersweet, uncertain ending is frequently a thrill. Both ideas surface and compete throughout the film, with solid arguments for both. Ride Your Wave is available for digital rental on Amazon in subtitled or dubbed editions , Vudu , and various other streaming platforms.

During the current millennium, Masaaki Yuasa has risen as one of the most original and qualitative voices of anime, through his unique style, both in terms of story and animation. The youths start hanging out and soon become a couple, with their love blossoming more intently as time passes. However, during one tragic night, Minato goes surfing alone and drowns while rescuing a person, leaving Hinako, Wasabi, but also his little sister, Yoko, completely shuttered. Masaaki Yuasa directs a film that presents life as riding a wave, filled with ups and down but also very beautiful. The first part presents an adorable love story, in romantic comedy style, while the second takes a darker turn, as it deals with regret and the way people deal with it.

I'm a long-time fan of anime director Masaaki Yuasa, and was pleased when he founded the studio Science Saru to continue directing independent works. Immediately, I had some concerns: despite the bit of fantasy-realism, the story appeared more grounded than what Yuasa normally creates. Certainly, his works are varied across many genres and themes, but his films and shows don't always work as well as they ought to. With "Ride Your Wave," my concerns were understandable, and ultimately, well-founded, even if the film is still ultimately easy to recommend.
