The newest addition was Float, by Bobby Rubio. Float tells a very personal story about raising a child with autism, suffused by magical realism. A young father takes his little boy outside to explore their yard. When he watches his father puff on a dandelion, the boy suddenly lights up and begins to float as well.
The facial animations are expressive and handsome. Water effects, such as tears, still look a bit false, but its a minor note. The music sweeps you along, especially during the flight segments.
There is only one line of dialogue in the film, as is typical of many Pixar shorts. I thought it was a detriment; the film really needs the one line, so the faux-silent film aspects come off as affected or sentimental. On my first viewing, I did not pick up explicitly that the child was neurodivergent. That first viewing felt like a story about a precocious kid with flight being an obvious metaphor. It actually felt more important that they were non-white — the way the father hides him away felt like a reflection of the extra scrutiny faced by non-white folks.
As such, it seemed like a bit of a facile story about accepting exceptional status — think Pa Kent disastrously telling Clark to hide his abilities at all cost in Man of Steel. After seeing the final dedication and accompanying featurette, the message deepened. Knowing the specifics, the wonder and shame of the father stood out in starker contrast, and the message of acceptance had more emotional heft.
I can understand wanting to bury the lede on the part of the creative team. The whole message of acceptance gets tarnished by too much fanfare. The events also seem a bit monstrous, especially the use of high-contrast when the father literally hides his child in the shadows.
Float is a nice addition to those stories, but could have acclimated the viewer better to avoid diluting the power of the film. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. More time to compose yourself after, I guess. Announced two years ago, it drew a lot of attention and excitement right off the bat—mainly because of its Fil-Am protagonists as well as the way it weaves father-son relationships: When the dad discovers that his son has the special ability to float, he tries to keep him safe from judgment. Because of this, the dad decides whether to run away or accept his son for who he is. We finally get a queer Disney protagonist and not just a token side character. Purl , directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan follows an earnest ball of yarn named Purl who lands a job at a fast-paced, high energy, male-centric start-up. Things start to unravel as she tries to fit in with this close-knit group. Purl must ask herself how far is she willing to go to get the acceptance she yearns for and in the end is it worth it? We do want to point out that Purl has a PG rating.

Mind blown! This one is more of an it-was-all-a-dream, whatever-happened-on- Lost sort of deal. But if you want a gut punch right in the feels, read on. Credit where credit is due: This isn't a particularly new interpretation of the movie and that's what it is, an interpretation, more so than a fact-based fan theory. It was recently resurfaced by Buzzfeed via Cheezburger , which seems to be adapted from this post on Reddit. He died at the beginning of the movie and everything after is his journey to heaven.

Representation is not just about putting a diverse array of faces on a product and calling it a day, but it is also about ensuring that this diversity actually empowers and puts authority into who it is telling the stories of. In the animated short, Float , a young father joyously plays with his son and soon quickly discovers that his baby sometimes floats — literally! But some time later, the baby has grown into an older child and the floating has now turned cumbersome. On an outing, the father loses his son in the middle of the playground and find that he is trying to interact with the park attendees — who all have varied, mixed reactions to his floating. Realizing what he has done, the father carries his son and cradles him on a swing set, slowly building up momentum to push him to float in the air again. In spite of the ongoing looks, the son returns to flight with a smile and his father runs around his child and laughs with him. The floating ability in the short serves as a broad representation of the behavioral differences that might come with raising a child who is on the spectrum versus one who is not.
