The movie begins with a young Flint Lockwood voice of Bill Hader presenting his new invention to his class. Flint goes home humiliated and defeated. The movie then takes us to present day with a grown up Flint. He still is trying to invent something. His inventions have been one failure after another. His mother has died 10 years earlier, and now he has no one who believes in him.

Movie Man: ‘Chance of Meatballs’ delivers laughs

Pixar and Dreamworks may be the two leading lights in Hollywood when it comes to animated fare, but Sony Animation's new offering suggests there may be a new kid on the block. The critics have gobbled up Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, the studio's third movie, with some degree of gusto. This 3D venture about a young man who invents a machine that turns water into food is based on a popular s children's book, though it's a fairly loose adaptation.

Here, the action is transferred to a weirdly Americanised island in the middle of the Atlantic which is overseen by the swinish Mayor Shelbourne voiced by a very funny Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame in a welcome break from his cameos in the Spider-Man movies for old mucker Sam Raimi. Meatballs as you'll forgive me for calling it for the rest of this review also provides more crowd-pleasing casting in the shape of Bill Hader, always good value in supporting roles, usually for Judd Apatow, but here voicing lead character Flint Lockwood, and Anna Faris, who has been quietly proving that she's much more than just a pretty face since that scene-stealing turn in Lost in Translation six years ago.

She plays a perky weathergirl who hides her intellect in order to get ahead. Finally, the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert , who likes 3D about as much as most children enjoy eating their greens, is quietly approving of this one. I've seen a lot of 3-D recently, and in terms of technical quality, this is the best. For me, Meatballs, despite that horrendous title, lacks the effortless understanding of the vagaries of the human heart and spectacular attention to detail of a Pixar flick, but stands head and shoulders above other recent animated fare such as Ice Age 3 or Monsters Vs Aliens.

The first half is as insightful and witty as you'll find in this hard-to-pitch form, where writers often struggle for coherency as they vie to keep the kids happy while also dropping in the occasional spot of satire or double-meaning to please more sophisticated palettes. The movie which arrives on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD tomorrow features more of the same gorgeous animation as the first film as well as tons of cleverly named food creatures, and nearly all the other original cast members in place. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is a ton of fun and deserves another look. Parade sat down with Pearn to discuss the film, how he escaped the pitfalls of most sequels, sentient food, and the power of female-driven stories. I was over in England working on Arthur Christmas when I got the phone call that they were serious about making a sequel. For me, it was about a year and a half after I came off of the first movie, and probably about four or five months after it was released in theaters.

How can a film that has so much creativity going for it just end up being as worthy as breadcrumbs? The film starts with a recap of the first film and continues right where the first film left off. Live Corp. They relocate all the inhabitants of the island to California so that they can get their cleanup done. But we soon learn that everything is not as it seems to be. Yep, the machine is creating animal life forms that are all foods: creatures such as Shrimpanzees, Mosquitoast, Cheespiders, Watermelophants,. Chester V knows about this and wants to get the machine for himself.

In Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, a giant walking taco draws near, and, as the menacing stomps grow louder, we see the pudgy belly fat of Brent ripple. That is just a small foretaste of what this animated movie is all about: absurd hilarity in the hands of clever filmmakers. To my surprise, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 was not only better than the first film, but it was very funny.

Movie review: 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs'

I saw two computer-animated movies last year. But you know what? But in this case, the original story was so thin it needed a little, ahem, beefing up. In the movie, all that falling food is causing by wannabe scientist Flint Lockwood voiced by Bill Hader. His invention lets him cause various foods to fall from the clouds — giant hot dogs, juicy steaks, colossal Jell-O molds — but eventually and inevitably , things get out of control and Flint, along with weathergirl Sam Sparks Anna Faris , flies up to the malfunctioning satellite to shut it down before Earth is buried under a mound of delicious but devastating debris.
