Pixar Review 21: Ratatouille

The studio's latest effort offers beautiful and strikingly realistic animation, but the flawed concept should have been scrapped. The film focuses on Remy voice of Patton Oswalt , a French rat who wants to be a chef. Imagine realistically animated rodents running rampant in the kitchen of a fine restaurant. The yuck factor of a fur-bearing harbinger of the plague whipping up your entree makes it hard to root for Remy. Remy has an acute sense of smell that allows him to pinpoint the ingredients in anything he eats — not a good thing if your family often eats garbage. His dad, Django Brian Dennehy , believes Remy's gift is best used to sniff out poison in their food and criticizes Remy for being a picky eater. While the film delivered everything the fans were waiting for, there was something else they got, something many film critics picked up on immediately. Both apprentices at different stages in life, Remy and his human counterpart become quick allies. Ratatouille also excels in the area of color and design. Like all the Pixar films before it, it avoids the overtly saturated and segregated coloring, or unnaturally elastic character movements sometimes associated with computer-animated films, and instead boasts a visual look that resembles a well-photographed live action-film. This approach to make the appearance of the film look like it was photographed by a cinematographer rather than colored by someone filling in shapes with a Wacom tablet and pen is key to final aesthetic in Ratatouille.

Super cool to position animation as something that kids watch and adults have to endure. What the Oscars joke fails to consider is that animated movies are a unique opportunity for filmmakers to create with the fullest scope of their imaginations, to offer stories that cannot be replicated in a live-action production, and to create visual and cinematic ideas that push far beyond the novel and into a surprisingly profound space — one that people of all ages can appreciate. In other words, great art can come from anywhere, in any form, and can reach anyone with an open mind.
