It chronicles the story of Himura Kenshin during his role in the Meiji Restoration as a legendary assassin of the Imperialist cause, while also revealing the origins of his famous cross-shaped scar and exploring his relationship with his first wife, Himura Tomoe. Rurouni Kenshin originally aired from in Japan. The story follows Kenshin Himura, a highly skilled swordsman and his journey across Japan during the Meiji era. Kenshin wanders Japan seeking forgiveness from his past of death and destruction. The story of the legendary assassin searching for redemption has been recognized worldwide as one of the greatest anime titles of all time. As the popularity of Rurouni Kenshin increased, a series of OVAs would be released as a prequel to the original series. Following the events of the hit TV series, the war against the Tokugawa Shogunate ended years ago.

It was later released with a directors cut, which edited all four episodes into a two hour movie. The English acting is absolutely abysmal at best. The monotonous delivery of the dialogue feels forced and contrived and the frequent mispronunciation of the names can become incredibly distracting. A common example is the name of one of the central characters, Yukishiro Tomoe Westernized as Tomoe Yukishiro. The Japanese version captures a sense of historical authenticity, as well as providing subtle characterization with each one of the central characters. Kenshin has a feminine and young sounding voice, reflecting both his inner youthfulness and contrasting it with his job as an assassin for the Ishin Shishi. Tomoe is a conflicted woman with a troubled and mysterious past and agenda which begin to conflict with her inner feelings which she forced herself to seal up.

This story tells of the time before Himura Kenshin arrived at the Kamiya dojo. Once upon a time, there was a boy named Shinta who witnessed a horrible, senseless, vicious triple murder - the murder of the women who had taken care of him, falling to the swords of a band of robbers. Only the blade of a master swordsman, Hiko Seijuro, saved him from the same fate. Hiko brings up the boy, renaming him Kenshin, and teaches him the art of the blade, but as more foes fall to the boy's sword, Kenshin's soul becomes more and more tainted by the blood he spills.
