The series tells the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table , featuring 'Arthurian' characters such as Lancelot , Guinevere , Tristan , Percival , Merlin , Uther Pendragon , and Igraine and other familiar elements of Arthurian lore, including the castle Camelot and Arthurian relics such as Excalibur. The series is not entirely faithful to the original legends since it adds new characters and stories which make the plot less brutal. Lavik , another king who wishes to conquer Camelot, attacks the castle. Arthur is saved by Merlin who sends him to a knight for safekeeping. For many years, this knight raises Arthur as his own son.

But in order to become a real king, he has to beat Lavic who is under the protection of Medessa, an evil witch. Thus, Arthur goes on a journey to seek the Holy Shield. On the way he runs into four boy knights-Lancelot, Perceval, Tristan and Guerrehet, who hold up the same ideals as he does. They make a pilgrimage from one country to another in search for the Holy Shield, helping some common people who are distressed by bad aristocrats under the influence of Lavic, and subjugating some bandits.

The dark warlord Mordred lays siege to Camelot but is killed by the king Uther Pendragon. Arthur grows into a man, living among the prostitutes, and becomes a streetwise dealer and fighter. Arthur becomes the one to successfully do so but collapses immediately after touching the sword. Vortigern plans a show trial where Arthur is crowned but plans that he will then be executed and Vortigern proclaimed king.
