Fact Check-Cartoon is not a prediction of the COVID-19 pandemic from the 1930s

As I recently wrote here at Paste , my favorite memories of childhood are of watching old cartoons from the golden era of animation. Imagine my delight, then, when I first laid eyes on Cuphead. Here are ten films to watch if you want to relive the look and feel of Cuphead. Bimbo would later star in other Fleischer Studios films as well, as the boyfriend of Betty Boop, who also appears in this short and played a major role in developing the aesthetic of Cuphead.

He was later phased out as the Hayes Code, a law that imposed morality standards on the production of entertainment, was enacted, as the idea of a dog dating a human woman was frowned upon. Another Fleischer Studios hit was the Popeye series of cartoons, which started when E. While the racial sensibilities of the latter two are wildly outdated, they probably served as at least partial inspiration for Cuphead segments like Djimmi the Great. You can also see more scattered throughout the Silly Symphony filmography, a chronological playlist of which you can find here.

Here the background is where the art truly shines, and as you watch, take note of how well Cuphead recreates the faded watercolor look.

It serves as an early example of the anthropomorphizing that would become all but a staple of animation in the decades to come. Possible influence from this film can be seen in the boss fights with Hopus Pocus and Pirouletta , and other casino or card themed touches like the character design of King Dice.

As a Fleischer Studios character, a variety of Betty Boop cartoons likely played a part in inspiring Cuphead. The best of her cartoons were arguably in the first three years following her debut, before the Hayes Code which dramatically altered her appearance and demeanor was enforced. It co-stars Bimbo, whose other films also played a role in the aesthetic of Cuphead , and who Chad and Jared tell me is their favorite recurring Fleischer Studios character.

Its look, however, can be seen echoed in levels like the boss fight with Baroness von Bon Bon in World 2. As you watch this Fleischer Studios cartoon cited elsewhere as among the many to shape Cuphead , you may see a lot of different faces and characters that remind you of a wide swath of Cuphead villains.

Released in , its legacy as one of the most surreal and convention-defying cartoons of all time remains to this day. Also our licensing partner talks directly to other members of the Fleischer family, who have all shared the same sentiment.

Are you going through a quarter-life crisis?

As a child, Daniel Goldmark experienced an earworm -- a tune that sticks in your head. As a music major in his early twenties, he had a similar experience with Schubert's Die Erlkonig. Around that time he came to the realization that his familiarity with these musical compositions came from hearing them in numerous cartoons, and that cartoons in fact had given him an eclectic introduction to various styles of music -- "classical, jazz, Tin Pan Alley, Hollywood film musicals, folk songs from America and around the world, Viennese opera and nineteenth-century American parlor songs, particularly the work of Stephen Foster. Music for animation has evolved since its original inception during the silent film era. Although some cartoons may have been delivered to the theaters with "special scores," according to Goldmark, early cartoon music before the age of sync sound focused on the theater's organ accompaniment as a means to display the musician's wit and skill as opposed to using the music to delineate character or create mood. The periodical Motion Picture News printed a statement from the Pathe home office, which suggested: "Jazz music goes well with Aesop's Fables. That's the conclusion reached after a number of tests, and consequently hereafter Pathe, the distributor of these subjects, will furnish musical effects sheets to each distributor booking one of these cartoons. Animation music in the s was not highly regarded, as exemplified by the term "mickey-mousing. Selznick, who supposedly used the term derogatively in comparing a Max Steiner score to a Mickey Mouse cartoon, with the implied meaning that the score was not only too simplistic, but also telegraphed what is happening in a scene.

Rock The Spacebar is a twice-monthly column investigating the great music that underpins your favourite games. C uphead , already, has made a name for itself. The indie title — which was seemingly in development for eons before its launch in — caught the eye of animation and gaming fanatics the world over. The elevator pitch for the game seemed so unlikely, so resolutely impossible, that very specific kinds of enthusiastic nerd around the world sat primed, waiting, for what promised to be a game unlike any other. But where the developers were inspired by Japanese wartime propaganda films and age-old cartoons watched on grainy VHS tapes, the composer — one Kristofer Maddigan — took his inspirations from more recognisable areas: from popular music of the 30s and 40s. No, for this, he wanted to go deeper.
