Sankarea: Undying Love Review
Sankarea: Undying Love is a romantic comedy anime series that tells the tale of Chihiro Furuya, the teenage son of a temple priest and his chance meeting with Rea Sanka, the prized daughter of the Sanka family. However, unlike other anime rom-coms, there is one surprising twist; Chihiro is obsessed with the undead and is only interested in zombie girls. Rea steals some of the reanimation potion meant for Babu and thus becomes a zombie after an accident kills her in a rather violent way.
I love rom-coms, and I especially love anime rom-coms for its over dramatization of adolescent emotions and the struggles of unrequited love. Upon watching the first few episodes, my hesitation toward watching this anime only grew. As mentioned above, this anime is meant to be a romantic comedy and true to its genre there certainly is aspects of blossoming romance between the two lead characters. I certainly enjoyed the bits of humour involved in the story.
What I struggled with, though, was the heavy theme of suicide and inappropriate behaviour of a father toward his daughter. No wonder Rea felt that the only way to live was to die. What lesson are we teaching if we show the audience that death is a lot better than life? Not to mention that this anime is uncensored so there may be bits and pieces that children should definitely not be exposed to.
To be fair, we should commend the creators of this anime for their courage in taking on such heavy going themes and mixing it with comedy, love and everydayness. Well, this series took a dark turn really quickly. I guess I expected another week of kawaii zombie desk ca-I mean cute zombie movie watching by Rea and Furuya along with more cleavage shots , but oh well. Onwards to the review! Sankarea, starring Andrew Garfield and produced by Marvel Entertainment. I hope I don't get arrested for posting this. While her father is overbearing and restrictive and a bit of a creep in the manga, it pales in comparison to the depiction in the anime. I wonder, if we struck him down would he become more powerful that we can possibly imagine? I had some doubts at first with the casting but her voice, while not extraordinary, does fit her role quite well.

For some reason, a possible zombie apocalypse is a situation that people really seem to enjoy daydreaming about. Over the past two decades, the zombie genre has steadily been permeating the anime industry. Sankarea: Undying Love is a zombie story, no doubt. Japan tends to enjoy mixing their zombie stories with teen romance and comedy, which thankfully distracts from the horrifying implications of falling in love with someone who probably just wants to gnaw on your flesh.

What is it with Japanese anime boys and kinky fetishes? So I resisted picking up or looking at Sankarea: Undying Love for a while. Because it has, you know, zombies in it. Supernatural beings of all sorts do little for me because, not being real, they can do whatever you want. I like the bones of this story.

Chihiro Furuya likes zombies. He gets his wish when he encounters Rea Sanka—the daughter of the school director—at the abandoned building he uses in an attempt to resurrect Baabu, the family cat, with a resurrection potion. Hoping to escape her awful home life, Rea consumes the potion and falls to her death, only to come back as a zombie?! Could this possibly be Chihiro's dream come true, or will it be a rude awakening? Sankarea: Undying Love is finished and has 12 Episodes. If Koyomi Araragi thought his life couldn't get any more complicated after meeting Hitagi Senjogahara, Mayoi Hachikuji, and Suruga Kanbaru, he's sorely mistaken. Without any knowledge of how it came to be, Koyomi finds himself in an unknown place as a prisoner. The reason for and answer to his predicament seem to lay in Hitagi's past and the con artist Kaiki Deishuu, but it becomes clear that there's much more to it than that, and it will threaten the well-being of those Koyomi holds dear.

To say it even more plainly, though, the opening volume of Sankarea sets the stage for a tale that is sure to delight zombie fans and romantics alike, beautifully bridging the gap between classic love ballad and grotesque reanimation thriller. When it turned out that the secret to keeping Rea from getting all corpse-like was to feed her hydrangea leaves I thought, ok, maybe she is instinctively trying to put things in her mouth in case they happen to be hydrangea leaves that can bring her back to functionality. That would have made some sense. But later after she accidentally wounds Furuya she licks his wound, even though she should have been full up on hydrangeas by that point.

Since I feel I am not experienced enough to properly review manga and games, they will be on here. Thanks for reading. I mean, when is a Horror manga ever Ecchi? Seriously, if you look through her list of manga not one of them has an ounce of horror in it except for Sankarea. Many of you were probably introduced to Sankarea through the anime, which, while being good, did multiple things wrong, mainly in its ending.
HD 60FPS? Filming zombies is serious business, my friend. We had Furuya — the cameraman — filming Rea just like always. Maybe he went a little too far by filming her during dinner but hey, who am I to judge?
