Hercules cartoon movie muses

Packed with Olympian delights and Herculean feats of animation, snapping with live-wire wit and wisecracks -- especially when the movie's majestically sleazy villain, Hades voiced by James Woods , blazes onto the scene -- "Hercules," Disney's smashing new mythological feature cartoon, is one of funniest and most purely entertaining of all the recent Disney animated efforts. From the moment the solemn narrator -- Charlton Heston -- is interrupted in the middle of his declamation on Greek culture by five white-gowned mini-Supremes called The Muses who begin shaking their bodacious Greek bodies while bursting into a frenzied pop number, "The Gospel Truth," the movie explodes into life. It's graphic and lively enough for kids, hip and clever enough for adults: another scintillating Disney display of modern animation technique, and an often hilarious satire of super-action movies and the modern celebrity sports media machine. You may know how the movie is going to turn out, but you may be surprised at the wit with which it gets there and the dazzling skill with which director-writer-producers John Musker and Ron Clements and cartooner-designer Gerald Scarfe show us many-headed hydras and Theban cityscapes. Or, at the end, with all his superpowers stripped from him by Hades' skullduggery, the way Herc launches a desperate defense against Hades' assault on Olympus.

Like all teenagers though, Hercules has to worry about peer pressure when the snobbish prince Adonis ridicules him. Revisiting Disney: Hercules

And while it may not have been the financial success the company was hoping for, it still resonates with many audiences today because of its unique art style, Gospel sound, and lovable characters. But believe it or not, there's a lot more happening in this film than meets the mortal eye. Upon closer inspection, fans may find that for a Disney film, Hercules manages to slip in quite a few jokes and pop culture references that could easily go unnoticed by younger audiences. While some references are nods to Greek mythology or Greek writers, some jokes are a bit more risque and better suited for an older crowd.

Disney has officially named Guy Ritchie as the director of its live-action remake of the animated film, Hercules.

FILM 2053: HERCULES (1997)

Though the studio had produced a number of other productions revolving around characters of colour, they were almost always the focal points of stories that, on some level, felt like Disney attempting to make up for the fact that it spent decades pouring the vast majority of its energies into stories about white characters. But the Muses are so ensconsed in a specific kind of Blackness that to change that would feel like a unavoidable deviation from the canon. Username or Email Address. Remember Me. First Name. The classic Hercules is more of a short-tempered, often tragic figure, whilst his movie portrayal depicts him as a lovable, gushing goofball.
