Popeye 1929 Tee

Popeye was originally just one of the many characters in a comic series drawn by Elzie Segar called Thimble Theater, which had been around for about 10 years before Popeye showed up. Popeye was a one-eyed, year-old born in a typhoon in Santa Monica, California , semi-deformed-looking sailor with a severe speech impediment. The Popeye character quickly became so popular, the strip was re-christened Thimble Theater Starring Popeye and then later just called Popeye , the same title it carries to this day.

William Costello. This gimmick, of course, was soon changed to spinach by Spinach not only gave Popeye superhuman strength, but also endowed the sailor with abilities like virtuoso dancing or playing piano. His love for spinach first showed up after he gets beat up and thrown into a spinach field. In a few cartoons, Popeye eats no spinach at all, but these are rare. In one, hospital patient Popeye force-feeds spinach to Bluto, so Bluto will beat him up and he can evoke sympathy from Olive.

In another semi-risque cartoon, Olive Oyl actually eats the spinach so she can beat up a very sexy woman gym instructor who is flirting with Popeye the gym teacher is based on Mae West. Some current television stations also edit out parts of the Popeye cartoons due to offensive, racist portrayals of African-Americans.

This outfit was to remain with Popeye through the run of the cartoon series, even after the end of the war. This series lacks any genuine humor and pales in comparison to the very funny original Popeyes.

The producer of these lame latter-day Popeyes, Al Brodax, later produced the superior but not great Beatles TV cartoons in the mids. I often wondered why Popeye was never in an American Navy uniform. The uniform looked more like that of the British. I fondly recall one cartoon episode, where as victory gardens were typically viewed on these types of cartoons during the war effort of WWII, well, Popeye is involved in one situation where he is eating his spinach, a German U-boat is involved, after consuming the green, he squeezes the Sub and out thru the periscope comes Tojo, Hitler and Mussolini.

He beats them up. I well recall, watching the ww2 popeyes on the tube. I never again seen them after ,so the word must have went out, about taking them off the air. One can today watch most if not all of them on youtube. When it comes to all out gung ho support for the war, few toons matched popeye.

He wore the white Sailor suit later. Segar only saw WW I and died in That was the other reason for the comic strip rendering and limitations. He was the casualty of prehistoric Political Correctness. Though comments were locked in from a bygone era, and the fact there were lots of anti-American propaganda cartoons, Popeyes cartoons of the era were considered verboten.

The only Popeye cartoons from the past are ones that are not widely shown today are the ones that are fairly racist. C Segar not E. Also he died in not Is there no one that can revive the New Popeye Adventures with all of his nephews.

I Think it will make it big the Box Office in 3d. FYI: Wimpy was the artistic rendering of creator E. This was about Popeye primarily, and origins. Wimpy and Sweet Pea were not until later. This is the focus on Popeye. Popeye has pretty much been killed off by the freaks who take their anti-smoking aggenda too far. Popeye had the pipe, the freaks said the pipe sent the wrong message.

The idiots never watched his cartoons to see that pipe had more uses than Inspector Gadget has gadgets. Flame thrower, periscope, propellet, jet engine, can opener, straw, sucked in spinach and the list goes on. There sure is a lot of bullshit in this article.

Also, the author is clueless about the s era Popeye cartoons. In one, Brutus buys all of the spinach factories and halts all spinach sales and as a result Popeye goes through withdrawal in a very strange and non-too subtle allusion to drugs. In another, the number keeps showing up building addresses, apartment door numbers, in phone numbers, the number of a train, etc. Then there were some where the episodes are just — well — very trippy.

I have astigmatism, and if I close one eye, I no longer see double. Maybe Popeye had this condition. Gig gig gig gig gig…. No joke -I absolutely remember him doing this. Popeye was a great cartoon. Cartoons were good back then. So guys, was Popeye a racist or not? Was the story around Popeye a story that was racist towards African Americans or any other human being?

He mined sublime comedy from this trio, but Popeye gave the strip star quality. His quirky can-do mindset was manna for Depression-era America. For two years, Segar took Castor Oyl and, later, Ham Gravy out West, in a rowdy, atmospheric narrative that, like its desert landscape, is full of peaks and valleys. Rube Goldberg did a similarly long sequence in his contemporary Sunday strip Boob McNutt —another marathon episode that deserves reprinting. As Paul Tumey notes in his informative introduction one of three top-flight pieces in this book , Segar entered comics as a lesser light, and had the good fortune to develop his populist art on the clock. Fisticuffs and domestic assaults abound in the strip and its topper, Sappo, which tells the story of a rocky marriage. Like John Stanley, Segar loved the shortcomings and near-sightedness of mankind.
