Jan 21, Nicole Sampson rated it it was amazing Shelves: will-read-to-my-children. This was one of my favorite books when I was little. The pictures look just like the ones in the movie.
They're very clear and beautiful. It's a longer picture book with chapters and large print. Sep 14, Julie rated it really liked it. My only problem was the illustrations. All the animals look fine but when you actually look at Princess Aurora or Maleficent their faces look rather strange. As I was reading this as much for the illustrations as for the story I was rather disappointed. Almost every picture felt like there was something slightly off about it, the ones with main characters most of all.

I'm sure I'm not the first to make the observation that the villains of Disney's animated features are often more interesting than their heroes and heroines. Think Cruella de Vil in ' Dalmatians,' the Wicked Witch of 'Snow White,' or the Beast of 'Beauty and the Beast,' and it's easy to savor all of the cruel wickedness far more than the blandly-vanilla sweetness. Nowhere may this be more true than with 'Sleeping Beauty,' a perfectly fine fable in the Disney canon, but one where its titular Princess Aurora and her romantic melodrama are overshadowed by the vividly drawn supporting characters, and particularly the delightfully-demonic Maleficent. That doesn't make 'Sleeping Beauty' a bad film at all, but it's one where all of the story and character elements are certainly not created equal, and furthermore, take a back seat to Disney's technical artistry. By now the story of 'Sleeping Beauty' is known by just about anyone who ever had a fairy tale read to them as a child. Culled from a mere four paragraphs from Perrault, the tale is quite straightforward and simplistic. Running a scant 75 minutes, the film oddly short-thrifts its main human characters who are generic at best.

Okay, so it has plenty of stereotypes but I don't think it is fair to judge this movie by today's standards. When we watch it, I'm sure to talk to my kids about how things may be seen differently today Somehow Disney managed to capture the essence of the fairy tale even if he softened things a bit but the dragon remains truly awesome to many children. Before you judge this one, sit down and watch it with a child. Odds are, they'll be riveted. I still am and I still love the music, too. Love surviving against all odds, good defeating evil and love winning out in the end.

Disney's 56th animated feature film tells the story of Moana, a teenage girl who goes on an adventure to save her Polynesian island and people. The film takes place about 2, years ago on the fictional island of Motunui, but the filmmakers went to great lengths to make sure the narrative details and visual aspects of the movie were as true to the South Pacific as possible. Directors John Musker and Ron Clements traveled to several islands to conduct research, primarily Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, with the latter becoming the main inspiration for Motunui. It's hard work, but someone's got to do it. While the plot of Hercules strays extensively from actual Greek mythology Zeus's extramarital affairs aren't exactly G-rated, after all , many of the locations in the film pay homage to real Mediterranean islands and classical architecture. For example, Phil's Island is based on the island of Rhodes, as implied by the Colossus of Rhodes ruins seen in some shots. And architecture buffs will notice the various nods to classical Greek structures, like the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the Acropolis, and the Temple of Zeus pictured.
