Through the fighting, the residents of the Underworld begin to break from their programming, making new alliances to save as many people as possible.
When all hope seems lost, an old friend joins the game for a major assist. The fourth season spends a lot of time in battle, but the focus on character motivations keeps it from ever getting stale. Seeing the Underworld residents finally claiming their agency from the game was extremely exciting, particularly for viewers who struggle to feel in control of their own lives.
Kirito is forced to face off against the Administrator alone, but he is only able to gain the upper hand when Eugeo gives his life to allow Kirito to duel wield. Though the Administrator ends up constructing her downfall, Kirito barely has enough time to say goodbye to Eugeo and briefly contact the real world before the power cuts off, taking Kirito down with it.
This episode was the perfect ending to the original Alicization arc, giving Eugeo the ability to sacrifice himself for what he believed in. When Asuna finds out that Yuuki is likely to die any day, she gathers all of their friends in the virtual world to honor her. Kirito exposes his duel-wielding ability in a boss room, prompting the leader of the Knights of the Blood Oath to challenge him to a duel to decide whether he and Asuna will be free or indebted to the guild.
By this point, many of the players had adjusted enough to start building lives in Aincrad, and Kirito is beginning that process himself. Although not as exciting as many of the other episodes, the character motivations are centered in a way that keeps audiences hooked through all of the chaos and separation to come.
Between the harm done to his physical body and his soul, Kirito is trapped in a coma, needing his loved ones to help restore him. As Kirito faces his most painful memories, his allies continue the fight for the Underworld, though the enemy begins to overtake them. With the combined efforts of Asuna, Leafa, Sinon, and finally Eugeo, Kirito can wake up and return to the battle. Between the nostalgia, emotional climax, and fight scenes, this is the episode all writers wish they could create.
What happens when a force that can cut anything battles an uncuttable force? They represent the very best the digital world has to offer when the games are repeatedly controlled by those with ill intentions.
While Kirito began SAO as a loner, he acquired a devoted group of friends and supporters over the years, all of whom come to his rescue in this episode. Along with major character death, this episode highlighted the importance of every episode that came before it.
The show is at its best when it focuses on the moral quandaries inherent in virtual worlds, and this battle episode did a surprisingly good job keeping those issues in focus. Kirito and Eugeo discover their pages in distress, with nobles Raios and Humbert abusing the girls under the belief that they are untouchable. And on the other hand, there might be things you should do, even if they are forbidden by law. While fans have grown accustomed to minimal bloodshed on SAO, this episode subverts the trend, with far more gore than any other episode.
Kirito discovers where Kayaba Akihiko was hiding within the game and confronts him in a one-on-one duel to the death. In many ways, the Aincrad Arc was the perfect story about the dangers of VR, with interesting characters, substantial battle scenes, and surprisingly emotional moments, given the weight of in-world deaths.
