Upon the destruction of their ship, Willy is separated from his parents. He lands on a wild and unexplored planet and with the help of Buck, a survival robot, he will have to hold until the arrival of a rescue mission. It's not the pace for everyone, but I really appreciated the exploration focus of this space adventure. Where most modern animation films of this level cram in as much action as possible, this one takes its time and creates a family friendly feel as this kid and his robot discover a new planet and the alien wild life on it.
I liked it. So did the rest of the family. My boy didn't really want to see it at first, being busy watching the iPad, but he soon found himself drawn too it as well. Whoa, whoa, that's a kid adventure and a half. A boy who's in the beginning playing games a lot thus gradually, naturally turning more and more mature as he's forced to learn how to survive in a new planet he's stranded in and eventually turning into an independent, badass explore - now all might seem impossible to happen to kids these days, but I sure as hell want every kid in the world to see this for a number of reasons.
One being: this film actually takes its time shows every single step of this kid's development, every struggle, every character moment that shapes him as a character.
It doesn't suddenly break out into a preachy musical number or into…. Succeeding the annihilation of their boat, William is detached from his parents with whom he journeyed in space. His extra capsule lands on a wild and unfamiliar planet and has to exist with the assistance of Buck, a survival robot.
Landen Beattie gives a good voice performance in his part as William, the young boy determined to get back to his mother and father, while also getting more than he bargained for on the explored planet. For an animated movie I got from Dollar Tree that comes from Viva Kids this is actually surprisingly good.
I mean usually Viva Kids releases any old animated movie from Europe, China etc. The animation is surprisingly very good and colorful. The whole plot about a kid being stuck on a alien planet having to survive with a cute little robot who's kind of a dick and violently overprotective kind of reminds me of Lost in Space.
But it's also a movie about him making friends with some of the wildlife on this planet as well. Feels like it was stuff we've all seen before, except for some really odd emotionless voice acting from the mum and dad - that was definitely new! I'm sure the original French was far better. It's pretty slim pickings out there for parents these school holidays so it was either this or trolls, and this was shorter. Known in some regions as Terra Willy, this animated adventure finds Willy in a tiny spot of bother when, after inadvertently encountering an asteroid shower, he is separated from his parents.
Safely stowed away in one of the pods from his family's now badly damaged space craft, he eventually finds himself on a new and previously undiscovered planet. With the help of his robotic chaperone, Buck, Willy goes about investigating this new environment until someone arrives to help him.
In a means to introduce young viewers to the concept of scientific discovery, Astro Kid paces itself quite deliberately as new species of both the flora and fauna variety are documented. Hulu only has the English dub which But this is such a cute movie. Especially loved the creature designs and the colorful environments.
I had thought that France would stay away from the human character model featuring a disproportionately large head and eyes with a small nose that Pixar and Disney rehashes but Terra Willy proves otherwise. With a story also involving a robot and an extraterrestrial setting the movie arrests its imagination and instead plays frustratingly safe by coming up with the most bland-looking characters one can conjure up.
Borderline lethargic action sequences and colours hitting almost every colour in a spectrum for majority of the scenes hints at a production that had been aimed at keeping the kids glued to the screen with the minimal effort possible.

If you or your kids like Wall E you will probably like this The visuals and animations are amazing, I love the creature designs, there are not many space exploration stories for kids out there and this is certainly a nice one. I enjoy a good story in any genre and this one is not bad at all.
