Despite how some isekai anime can be, it's actually hard to find one with an awful lead protagonist. The series is written for the sake of the main character; the conflict and world exist around the main character instead of the other way around. As for the side characters, more often than not they're paper-thin at best and don't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as the protagonist.
But, sometimes a series' protagonist can be such a drag on everything else that the series would be literally better off without them. It's a rare occasion, but when it happens it makes the rest of the isekai series borderline unwatchable. In these cases, the side characters steal the spotlight from the protagonist. Let The Familiar of Zero teach every anime fan at least one thing: tsundere characters can be a lot to handle.
Despite this, Louise has to cast a summoning spell to pass one of her first-year courses. In an explosion, she summons a human named Saito, who she initially tries to keep from talking so she can treat him like a pet. Though this fails, Louise is intent on dehumanizing Saito, even demanding he eats like a pet from the ground.
If that's not bad enough, she attacks him any time any other woman treats him with respect. Despite many of the other characters being likable, it's possible to drop The Familiar of Zero because of Louise alone. Cop Craft takes place in a world where beings from other worlds cross over into the human world often. Though this normally results in hijinx, in Cop Craft , the fantasy creatures are exposed to — and engage in — illegal activities like drugs and trafficking.
This serious setting should realistically have serious protagonists. But instead, viewers wind up watching Tilarna Exedilika, a Knight who looks down on everyone around her because of her noble status. While this can be amusing, most of the time her "fish out of water" behavior is portrayed as a joke, which doesn't line up with Cop Craft's otherwise serious setting.
A series about her partner, former JSDF soldier Kei Matoba who has trouble trusting non-humans, would have been a much stronger series. I'm Standing On A Million Lives deserves credit for doing something that's outside the norm with isekai characters. They're not overpowered and the men aren't automatically swamped with attention from women. Every fight is a struggle, and not a single victory is guaranteed. However, Yotsuya, the lead character of I'm Standing On A Million Lives is so caught up in his own self-loathing and self-pity that he turns into something of an edgelord.
While his backstory makes his distance from other people understandable, it doesn't make it better. What makes Yotsuya even more frustrating is he's by far the most competent character in the series, but his fellow party members are much more likable. In Death March To The Parallel World Rhapsody , Ichirou Suzuki was a regular programmer who went to sleep and somehow found himself transported to a fantasy world based on the game he was working on.
Thanks to an overpowered spell he uses on an army of dragons, Ichirou's stats and level become maxed out at But even though he's one of the most powerful characters in his world, he doesn't do nearly enough with his powers.
Ichirou picks up a harem of women who do everything he wants, but that's a fraction of what he's capable of with his abilities. Other isekai characters create entire kingdoms, but Ichirou spends much of the series not wanting to rock the boat. Ginta seems like a different kind of protagonist from what people are used to when MAR begins. He's bullied for being a weak nerd with bad eyesight, but then he's suddenly pulled into the world of MAR-Heaven.
There, rather than maintaining his intelligence, he becomes the same kind of boisterous Goku-clone that most shonen anime have to deal with. By comparison, the rest of Ginta's allies in Team MAR have more unique personalities that break away from the expected tropes of shonen anime. This makes the rest of them far more entertaining to watch than the others.
Kirito was never a great protagonist to begin with. He carries an air of mysteriousness to him early on in Sword Art Online , and that makes fans want to pay attention to him.
Plus in the first season, he willingly makes himself the enemy of the other players to give the players something to be angry at besides the other beta testers. But by the point of Alicization , most of Kirito's character development is done. Both Eugeo and Alice are dealing with how the Administrator has permanently changed their lives and watching them adapt drives the series. There's nothing wrong with weak protagonists, as watching their growth into someone strong can be compelling.
But that's not what happens in Grand Order. Both Ritsuka and his Servant Mash are assigned to save the world, but because they're lacking in power, everyone else has to save them instead. It's a story beat that works when used sparingly, but in Grand Order's case, it's used so frequently that it feels overdone. Read Next in anime.
