Cartoons: Animators look at licensing, business deals
Bal Ganesh 2, which released on 23 October, limped out of theatres barely two weeks later. The film, produced by Shemaroo and directed by Pankaj Sharma, was made on a budget of Rs6. It cost six times more than Bal Ganesh, but failed to create even half the interest that the first film generated. Hanuman, produced by Manmohan Challa and released by Sahara India Parivar, was made on a relatively low budget of Rs2.
Yet it made decent profits with its neat and fast-paced storyline. This attracted many investors to the medium and multiplex screens were swamped by infant Hanumans and Ganeshas.
All of them flopped. Owing to the economic downturn, several of the films scheduled to release this year have been postponed. One of the first technically sophisticated animated feature films to be produced in India was the film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Ram. Directed by Ram Mohan, known as the father of Indian animation, the film was an Indo-Japanese collaboration. Other animated films met with a similar fate.
Kumaresh—the creator of Simpoo, the animated character featuring in Channel V fillers, and the ads of Amaron Batteries—says saw so many animated films flop because the ones making them were not animators but investors.
However, Kireet Khurana, whose Toonpur Ka Superrhero is set to release next summer, thinks commercialization is a good step. Khurana takes this argument a step further, saying producers pay Indian studios one-third of what it actually costs to make an animated film or series. In , things can be expected to change. One of the most anticipated animated films, Arjun, directed by Arnab Chaudhuri and produced by UTV, is set to release in the summer. Though wary of mythologicals, Khurana claims that Arjun is going to be a benchmark for Indian animation.

Mythological anecdotes of Lord Ganesha
Last Updated on May 16, Amongst a multitude of gods that are present in the pantheon of Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha is perhaps one of the most popular ones. His idols are omnipresent in nearly every corner of the country and there is huge interest around celebrating Ganesha Chaturthi. That might also be due to the very source of the name Ganesha, which has been formed from two words. This, quite literally, makes Ganesha as the Lord of the masses. Lord Ganesha has been worshipped for many years and his stories have gained quite a lot of popularity amongst people.

Broadcasters commission second seasons of Cosmos-Maya’s ‘Gadget Guru Ganesha’, ‘Titoo’, and ‘Bapu’
Fans of animated movies still have to look to the West for interesting offerings, because, when it comes to animated films, Bollywood still has a long way to go. Why do we continue to give animated films a wide berth? Recently, the Parr family kept us at the edge of our seats with their superheroic pursuits in Incredibles 2. Animated films are a delight to watch because, apart from presenting us with the cutest, most unique characters, they also touch upon some out-of-the-box plot lines. Unfortunately, to get our dose of these cartoony delights, we still have to look to the West, as Bollywood has a long way to go when it comes to animated films.
