As popular as foreign TV has gotten recently, I'm mildly curious as to whether or not anyone here watches anime or reads manga. If you do, who or what got you into it? If not, do you have a reason or have you just not bothered? I have to say I first got into anime when I was pre-school aged, though I didn't know it wasn't an American show until much later. Sailor Moon was on everyday around 3, so I'd watch it before me and mom went to pick my brother up from school. It was a cool show, so I didn't think anything of the funny looking people and occasional kana.

Apple Park, the massive donut-shaped Apple headquarters that Apple finished building last year, is an architectural marvel. The building makes extensive use of massive, floor-to-ceiling glass panels, giving the illusion that the building blends seamlessly into the surrounding forest. But when Apple started letting employees use it in January, they discovered a big problem: they kept running into glass windows and doors.

In the first few days, three people suffered injuries serious enough to require calls to He said he hit his head but didn't suffer serious bleeding.

Two other emergency calls from Apple's campus were made two days earlier on January 2—which the Chronicle says is the day Apple employees started moving into the new headquarters. The caller said the middle-aged employee "has a little bit of a cut on the eyebrow," and that the injury was likely serious enough to require stitches.

Thankfully, none of the injuries seemed to be life-threatening and didn't require hospital visits. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a city official in Cupertino, where the headquarters is located, had warned Apple about the risk of absent-minded employees walking into glass walls and doors.

Fire codes require glass walls and doors to be clearly marked for this reason. In January, Apple vice president of real estate development Dan Whisenhunt said that Apple hadn't had too much trouble with birds flying into the building's huge glass windows. After that trio of calls, Apple began to take this problem more seriously, adding stickers to the windows to make them easier to see.

It's as if the whole episode was deliberately designed to give people a chance for cheap shots at Apple. OK - here's my effort: Apple prioritising form over function? At one point Apple made products that were both fashionable and functional.

Lately it seems to be fashion over function. It seems fitting that their headquarters follows the same design philosophy. I would guess the stickers they put up say something like, "Hey moron - don't call after you walk into this". Reminds me a little of Far Side where the guy in the Mensa T-shirt was pushing on the glass door that said 'In'. Maybe it should have had an apple symbol on it.

Heroes fighting equally powerful villains in anime is practically a tradition, but what isn't is seeing the protagonist lose to their enemy. Rarer still is a hero actually dying to the villain, which can come as a shock to their friends and fans. Even if some of these deaths were short-lived or arguably well-deserved in some cases, the fact that an anime's main character bit the dust at all still makes their demises surprising or even harrowing.
