Steven Universe received critical acclaim for its queer and trans representation with several characters, most notably Stevonnie. The series also featured plenty of adult humor and innuendo, making it one of the 90s edgier cartoons and paving the way for adult-oriented series on Adult Swim.

The titular character, a wallaby that emigrated to the United States after graduating high school although there were some inconsistencies on that throughout the series , worked as a cashier at a local comic book shop called Kind-of-a-Lot-O-Comics, which has now become an instant-print kiosk. Rocko was single and lived with his dog, Spunky. He had different jobs in a couple of episodes, but by the end of Rocko's Modern Life , he was back at his job at the comic book shop. He lived with his parents and was unemployed by the time he was launched into space with Rocko, Spunky, and Filburt.
The trio returned for the Netflix special two decades later, and much of the plot is centered on Rachel Bighead coming out as transgender to her parents. This story of inclusion and acceptance is so needed in our current climate. The message of transgender inclusion can be a powerful and impactful moment for those watching at home, especially in the realm of a cartoon made with children in mind.
