Adventure time best 2020

Just over a year after its soulful series finale , Adventure Time is back in a whole new way. Each special stemming from the original Emmy and Peabody award-winning animated series created by Pendleton Ward and executive produced by Adam Muto will center on a different beloved character or pair of characters starting with two specials launching in title BMO and Obsidian. BMO, of course, will follow the small, lovable BMO the robot as he becomes the only hero available to try to solve a deadly space emergency. Meanwhile, Obsidian pairs vampire Marceline and Princess Bubblegum on a trip to the Glass Kingdom that will have them reflect on their rocky past and prevent a future catastrophe. Following those two specials are Wizard City and Together Again. While Wizard City sees Peppermint Butler start over at wizard school trying to save his reputation, Together Again will round out the specials with Adventure Time protagonists Finn and Jake coming back together for one more adventure.

Honestly I was extremely pleasantly surprised by this first episode of "Distant Lands", featuring and named after one of the most beloved characters from the original series, the endlessly lovable BMO, and this episode certainly is a whirlwind from start to finish that never stops giving, a rollercoaster of emotions and just what we needed to see for a first dive back into the world of Adventure Time.

Personally I thought they really ticked pretty much all the boxes for what I would expect and want from a spin off - there were a lot of voices and characters some more obvious than others from the original, there were actually lots of references to the original series from characters to plot points and especially some of the new info dropped about the universe of AT which we never got in the original.

There really were some quite big reveals and a fair few other references that are more mysterious in nature, as well as some that only megafans will catch. I wasn't particularly expecting this spin off to expand too much on the original universe, you never really know how much a team wants to touch anything surrounding the source material, especially with a show as fondly remembered as "Adventure Time", so this was a nice surprise for me and I really hope they continue this trend in the other three episodes as I have rarely been so invested in the lore and world building around a show so much as Adventure Time.

The hour long format is great for the Adventure Time writers and allows a story to be built and developed a bit more easily, or perhaps deliberately, than in the original series, and although I'm only giving this a 9 right now I can see that changing when the other 3 parts have been released, if they are all of this quality I would be happy to revise that to a 10 and of course I very much hope that's the case.

Evergreen is also the series at its most beautiful, with beautifully crafted background, designs, locations, and lighting that really make the whole thing pop. The man is a master storyteller, and I think Evergreen is a passion project that certainly proves how much creativity explodes into his work. Cloudy was spawned from an idea by Pat McHale that came around during the first season. Cloudy sticks to most of that, while taking its own creative liberties in how far our characters have come since the beginning.

The perfect starting point for this list. Based around the quest for a legendary book, this episode features charming one-off characters and hilarious old-lady zapping. Jake : Hey! Back off you gnomes. That kid just saved you! You should thank him, not destroy old ladies! This episode is a charming little whodunnit with an unexpected conclusion that you could ACTUALLY have guessed if you paid close enough attention throughout the episode. It just serves to highlight the huge diversity of styles Adventure Time is capable of showing without losing its zany ambiance.

But for as much time as it spent on the latest apocalypse to imperil the Land Of Ooo, the series finale spent nearly as much time reminding fans—including god knows how many kids who literally grew up with the show, in the decade-plus it was on the air—that Adventure Time might be over, but the adventure itself never has to end.
