There have been many moments throughout the medium of anime that are able to pull on the heartstrings of its viewers, but perhaps none did so more than the series of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. Following a group of friends from a terrifying event of their past and how they are affected by the tragedy in the present, it seems that a recent stage play to celebrate the franchise took the opportunity to imagine what the characters were up to ten years following the finale of both the anime and manga series and what the Super Peace Busters were up to. The creator responsible for the series, Mari Okada , returned to write the further adventures of the group of friends, with Tatsuyuki Nagai drawing the storyboards and Masayoshi Tanaka creating the illustrations. While the return to the classic series didn't give us a new anime to detail the young friends ten years down the road, it went into quite some detail regarding what each of the members was up to many years following the death of their friend Menma, who returned down the line to see what her living friends were up to in the mortal world. The final episode of the series saw Menma writing to her friends, thinking about what they would be doing ten years into the future, with Tsuruko becoming a web designer and Anaruo working as a dental hygenist to name a few.

However, I wanted a fresh opinion on this one and gave it a rewatch. I really expected my enjoyment of the series to drastically decline and be left with just a moderate appreciation for Anohana by time I was done. Did my expectations match my feelings once I finished for the second time two years later?

Jinta is a shut-in who spends his days playing video games. One hot Summer day, he is visited by a childhood friend, Menma who has a wish she would like him to grant.

Thinking her to be a mere hallucination brought on by the Summer heat, he does his best to ignore her. In order to do so, Jinta must reunite with his estranged childhood friends so that they can not only help Menma move on, but themselves as well. Anohana originally aired in April It had an eleven episode run followed by a film in Directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai, also known for Toradora!

From start to finish, each episode delivers the narrative with excellent pacing and character development. The first time I viewed Anohana , I was quickly captivated by the narrative and blew through the series in one sitting.

After all, I did know how everything would play out. However, I noticed that each episode went by fairly quickly and I never caught myself losing interest.

This is a true testament to how well paced and engaging the series is. At its heart, Anohana is a story about the dangers of not facing your feelings. Even the characters that seem to have moved on, slowly unravel and are shown to still be stuck in the past unable to move forward.

Everyone has, or will, experience a traumatic loss in their lives at some point and that makes the story really relatable. The show earns each moment the characters cry on-screen, it earns the character drama, and for the most part, it delivers all of it in a serious and grounded way.

The only time the story really falters is with its humor. While definitely needed to break up the tension brought on by the gravity of the subject matter, it can really be hit-or-miss. It seems a bit silly that Jinta never really tries too hard to prove that Menma is really back from the dead. Since he is the only one that can see her, the other characters naturally have a hard time accepting his claims at face value. Of course, the show does offer a reasonable explanation to this and eventually has Menma attempt things like writing messages, but it does take a bit longer than one might expect.

However, these are kind of nit-picky problems and are all addressed by the show. I even thought it was going to. A true testament to the story and what it has to offer. They feel like real people, which is something I look for in characters. Yukiatsu causes most of the conflict in the series. While I can understand his perspective, he does some pretty messed up stuff. His character is given a fair amount of depth and is one of the most damaged individuals in the whole series.

Of the primary cast, Poppo is the other note-worthy character. They are given a fair amount of attention in the narrative. As a whole, the cast is fleshed out better than some shows with a more traditional episode count. The story is concise, never outstaying its welcome. The narrative crams in a lot of evocative emotion with plenty of breathing room from the more emotionally charged scenes. For these reasons alone, I hope I have been able to convince some of you that Anohana is well worth your time.

Briefly, I wanted to touch on the animation, which was done by A-1 Pictures. They have a mixed reputation, but the animation here does its job.

It is striking when it wants to be, but nothing mind-blowing here. What I really want to talk about is the music. No, really. When they were planning out the scores to include, and how each would be executed, somebody knew what they were doing. Each piece of music blends well with whatever is occurring on screen. Each background piece provokes the proper emotion without overstepping and demanding more attention than the characters.

Truly well done. The opening and ending themes are also fantastic. In particular, I love the part where the firework shoots up into the sky and the music syncs up just right. The theme is played at the end of almost every episode matched with a mini-emotional climax or cliff-hanger. Another well executed component of Anohana. Speaking of the music, this was one of the main reasons I had a hard time watching this anime over again.

Each episode hit me with all the emotional weight of the entire series. The music was a big factor in this for me, the actions on screen definitely played their part but the music drove the impact home even harder. This rating is for shows that I feel are the best-of-the-best and warrant a look from any fan of the medium.

The show is available for free legal streaming via Crunchryroll. Some films for shows like this are just clip shows but this film is more than that. The film picks up 1 year later following the events of the original series. However, it does feature about a full episode worth of new content which adds a lot to the already great story. Plot wise, it jumps from character to character giving you their perspective on events both new and old.

The old bits are spread out with the new bits which helps with the pacing. For all who voted and anyone who has made it this far into the review, thanks! This weekend, the Anohana movie was released in Japanese theaters. And while some parts of it work well, others neuter the emotional power of the series. Taking place some time after Menma's ascension to heaven, the Anohana movie follows the five remaining friends as they attempt to write letters to "send" to Menma and keep her up to date with their lives and feelings. These scenes serve the dual purpose of showing us a bit of what happened to the group after their supernatural experience and acting as a framing device to show flashbacks to the series. In general, these scenes cycle from person to person, occasionally returning to Anaru who is having trouble writing a letter to Menma because of her feelings for Jintan. It has four times the resolution of a regular Full HD screen, along with 8. It all comes together when the five meet, discuss the events of the series, and burn their letters to send them to Menma. As far as epilogues go, it is a decent one that ties up many of the emotional loose ends left over from the series.

When looking for a show to fill the void left by something like Clannad , Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day would make a lot of people's recommendations lists. And Anohana 's writer, Mari Okada, is one of those writers able to take things that everyone universally understands, but many aren't able to articulate quite as coherently so that understanding gets across to an audience. Both adolescence and grief and trauma are concepts that, given their complexity and the feelings they can engender, can be difficult to explore in a writing headspace. But in the anime and manga she writes, and even at times directs, Okada is someone who can strike that balance between how difficult growing up can be in almost any society, from the weight of expectations to having to learn to handle more complex, possibly even daunting emotions, to this freeing sense of new possibilities for the future opening up if the one growing up is brave enough to seize them. The story of Anohana , as aforementioned, centers around a group of teenagers who are haunted by the ghost of their childhood friend.

A few years back, I was hearing a lot of good comments about a few different anime: Steins Gate, Anohana, and Madoka Magica. This series follows a group of childhood friends who are now high schoolers who have not gotten along since their friend Menma passed away. Then one super hot summer day, the main character starts conversing with an older Menma that has arrived in his house, but only he can see her. Already withdrawn, he decides to let his delusions blow over. Menma, however, will not let him settle for that and forces him to reunite the friends in order to help her pass on.

The flower We Saw That Day is one of those uncommon animes that takes a classification that is frequently abused by anime makers and makes it correct. It will have you begin feeling for the characters from scene one, and you will be feeling extremely emotional by the last episode. In any case, I promise you, that you will be hit hard when this series finishes. I even begin to get teary eye just thinking about anime itself. The story follows a secondary school drop-out named Jintan. The anime begins when he starts to see visions of his youth crush, Menma, who passed away after a terrible accident near a river when they were very young. Buddhism is slightly hinted in the beginning and the end of the series.

Writer of original novel : Mari Okada. In many cases series of that size just seem rushed. Since having seen Ano hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai, however, I now feel that no anime of that length has any excuse for being less than excellent.

Throughout the movie, scenes set in the present day are interspersed with flashbacks to events in the original anime, allowing viewers to recall the pivotal moments in the series, although there is still enough new content to make a significant contribution to the overarching story in AnoHana. I finished AnoHana somewhere during early June last year: this anime was very poignant, and while I thoroughly enjoyed AnoHana , I found myself unable to write about it effectively. In AnoHana , the entire cast is haunted by this loss, and even though ten years had passed, no one was really able to move on, hinting at just how close the Super Peace Busters had been ten years before. Thus, when her ghost reappears in the depths of summers years later, the Super Peace Busters find themselves at odds with one another, never having gotten past what had happened that day. However, through Jinta, Menma is able to convey her one desire for a wish to be fulfilled, and the Super Peace Busters eventually do get their emotions out into the open, drawing on one another for support. Finally able to see Menma, the Super Peace Busters are able to properly say farewell and begin moving into the future together as they pursue their own paths.

Now in their high school years, a sudden surprise forces each of them to confront their guilt over what happened that day and come to terms with the ghosts of their past. Three months and as many series after completing Your lie in April , I was still feeling its effects. I expect memories of that anime will always stick with me, but my issue was in getting over what I personally felt at its conclusion.

Anohana is one anime in a line of many emotional tearjerkers. Because, you know, we all need a good cry every so often right? While the story has huge amounts of potential, as far as execution goes, it feels like it tries to do a lot, while ultimately just doing a good job all around.
