The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been extremely lucrative for Disney, and the second installment, Dead Man's Chest, became the highest grossing movie of Toy Story 3 didn't just make all of us cry, it was Pixar 's highest-grossing film to date at the time.

The computer-animated film, released in , saw Woody, Buzz and co accidentally donated to a daycare centre when Andy went off to college. It was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and passed the billion dollar mark at the box office.

It was also one of the most expensive animated films ever made. After nine years away, the toys made a triumphant return as we watched them adjust to life with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky, voiced by Tony Hale.

It was the lowest grossing installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but still managed to rank as the seventh highest grossing film of The only one of Disney's more classic titles to make the cut is 's The Lion King, which has continued to delight audiences over the years. The tale of Simba, who is set to succeed his father Mufasa as King of the Pride Lands, remains the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of all time.

The first of the Marvel superhero movies to make the list, 's Captain Marvel is Marvel's first female-led film. The sequel to Captain America and Captain America: Winter Soldier was the most successful of the trilogy, and was also that year's highest grossing film.

While it is believed Chris Evans has hung up his shield, a fourth film starring Anthony Mackie is in the works. After 14 years away, The Incredibles returned to our screens in to critical acclaim. Incredibles 2 is Pixar's highest grossing film, and received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

While live-action remakes might not be everyone's cup of tea, the film was a huge success and was praised for being faithful to the original. Not only did Frozen become the highest-grossing animated film of all time at the time when it was released in , it has become a cultural phenomenon and the bane of every parent's life. The Last Jedi divided opinion amongst fans when it was released in , but there were no problems at the box office. The second-last film in the Skywalker saga is the second highest grossing Star Wars film ever, and received four Oscar nominations.

Black Panther broke many records upon its release in , including becoming the highest-grossing film directed by a Black filmmaker, and the first superhero film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

A sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , is in the works, but sadly will not feature T'Challa, with actor Chadwick Boseman having died in , aged The sequel to Avengers may not have outdone the original, but the ensemble superhero film still managed to break the top 10 highest-grossing films.

In the film, which is believed to be the second most expensive ever made, the Avengers face off against Ultron, an artificial intelligence obsessed with causing human extinction.

By the time the Frozen sequel rocked around in , a generation was obsessed with Elsa and Anna, so it was bound to be a success. The live-action remake has edged out the original The Lion King , becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The blockbuster saw the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy team up to stop Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones, and ended on a major cliffhanger. Three years after Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the first installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy was released in , and they must have been pretty happy with their decision.

Not only is Endgame Disney's biggest-ever film, it's also the second biggest film of all time, just behind Avatar. Focusing on the surviving members of the Avengers trying to reverse the damage of Thanos' snap, the film was a culmination of the prior 22 films in the MCU, and featured the end of many characters' story arcs. To help condense and understand this legacy, Disney aficionados have long been classifying the extensive catalogue of films into different moments or eras of filmmaking. As a general rule, Disney live-action films, direct-to-video sequels and films made by Pixar Studios are not included in these categories. The golden era began with the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in , putting Walt Disney Productions on the international map and proving that animation had great potential outside the realm of 5-minute cartoon gag reels.
