In this Disney adaptation you still follow the exploits of Robin Hood and his trusted companion Little John as they outfox greedy Prince John to save the good people of Nottingham, only all the characters are anthropomorphic animals. Robin Hood was especially low-budget for a Disney film, which assumedly left Reitherman and his artists with plenty of challenges.
Brian Bedford gives the titular fox a pleasant blend of mischief and gracious dignity. All in all, the talented cast adds tremendous life and personality to a group of memorable, but especially static characters. With these incredible vocal turns, bright and brisk dialogue carries the film through all the thumb sucking and swordplay. But there are still a few clever scenes in Robin Hood that could even please those adults that might be wary of such animated fare.
Slapstick humor and bumbling beasts abound. Plus, take the time-honored addition of the archery contest in the Robin Hood legend. Sure, it lacks a glass slipper fitting or Pride Rock moment to make the movie especially iconic.
At the same time, it has enough thrill of adventure to remind you why the tale of Robin Hood became such a beloved legend in the first place. The ending takes a bleaker route that shockingly leaves our hero wounded and King Richard returning to his kingdom in ruins, before progressing to the same happy finale with a wedding between Robin and Marian. The most important feature of the Blu-ray edition is the restoration and remastering that the Disney cartoon has had.

Prince John is the main antagonist of Disney 's animated feature film Robin Hood. He is the younger brother of King Richard , from whom John usurped the throne of England with the aid of his assistant, Sir Hiss. Despite his power, John is reviled by his "subjects" for heartlessly stealing from the poor to heighten his own wealth and prosperity. His mood switches instantly when Sir Hiss mentions his brother King Richard and he becomes explosively angry. The scene is mostly exposition crammed into the space of a few minutes but what we see here is a prime example of what to expect from the character for the rest of the film. This one is obvious from the start. After Prince John is humiliated by Robin Hood robbing him in the disguise of a gypsy woman he becomes obsessed with revenge and flies into a rage whenever anyone mentions Robin Hood. He throws tantrums when others make fun of him, or suggest he has no claim to rule, and he sentences not one but two people to death — one by beheading and another by hanging. Pretty dark stuff for a kids movie.
