The Day Of The Dead is not a time of sadness but time of celebration and remembrance of loved ones who have passed away — a celebration of life not loss. The Book Of Life starts off in a museum, where an enthusiastic tour guide begins to tell a folktale to a group of misbehaving kids on a school trip. They observe two young boys, Manolo and Joaquin, competing for the heart of their friend Maria — the two rulers strike a wager over which boy Maria will marry. With some divine supernatural intervention along the way, we follow all three young people are they grow up and face all manner of family expectations and traditions.

And while it didn't enjoy the same kind of box office success, The Book of Life is just as deserving of praise as those others. But aesthetically it couldn't be further apart, telling its love story through the vibrantly coloured prism of Mexican folklore.

Picture: With its baroque marionette-style characters and a vibrant aesthetic inspired by Latino culture and folk-art, The Book of Life looks like no other 'toon we've seen — and Fox's Blu-ray shows it off brilliantly. Whether you opt for the set's 3D or 2D p presentation each gets its own disc , you're in for a flawless experience, with both 2. The 'blocky' nature of the characters plays perfectly into the hands of the 3D encode, which never falters when it comes to creating subtle but convincing volumetric effects.
Nor is the stereoscopic encode short of truly eye-popping 3D showcases, as a look at Manolo's arrival in the 'Land of the Remembered' and the subsequent parade Chapter 15 , proves.
Not only does the multichannel track excel at immersing you in the film's locations through its wrap-around sound effects, it's depth and range also comes in handy with the musical interludes that litter the film. Dialogue is also rich and cleanly rendered — a good thing, too, given how thick some of the characters' accents are.
Extras: All of the extras are on the set's 2D platter. The Adventures of Chuy three minutes is a fun animated short featuring the film's adorable piglet. This is followed by a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes: Closer Look at The Book of Life 10 minutes provides an overview of the film's genesis and production; The Music of Life nine minutes focuses on the songs — new and original — featured in the film; and Digital Carpenters: Behind the Book of Life at Reel FX 11 minutes looks at the film's unique imagery and the animation process.
Also well worth your time is the chat track by director Jorge R. Gutierrez and collection of five art galleries. Rounding things out are the trailer, the No Matter Where You Are by Us the Duo music video three minutes , and a virtual jukebox of 16 songs from the film. Mandalit del Barco. Set in the s in Mexico, the animated movie centers on the fiery and brave Maria Posada voiced by Zoe Saldana , and her two suitors: the handsome town hero Joaquin Channing Tatum and the soft-spoken Manolo Diego Luna , who comes from a long line of bullfighters. At first, it looks like a lively Mexican fiesta, filled with music and bright, colorful papel picado — cut-out paper decorations. Ruled by a sensuous "La Muerte" voiced by Kate del Castillo , this land has "epic fiestas, and all you-can-eat churros. He never forgot Mauricio. He even proposed to and then married his wife, Sandra Equihua, on the holiday. They encouraged him to persuade Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, his hero, to produce it.

Most computer animators seem to feel obliged to strive for either photorealism or Disney-style cuteness: it's rare to encounter a film in this medium with a truly distinctive look. One of the exceptions is Book of Life , an imaginative first feature written and directed by Mexican animator Jorge R Gutierrez and produced by his countryman Guillermo del Toro, inspired by the mythology surrounding the Day of the Dead. Gutierrez's style is colourful, even freakish: he draws from Mexican folk art, but also from Cubism, stop-motion animation — The Nightmare Before Christmas is a clear inspiration — and underground cartooning. Though the characters have a limited expressive range, their stiffness is given a neat rationale: they're imagined as intricately carved wooden puppets, with visible joints, big blocky bodies and spindly legs. The story starts out with a folktale simplicity, as the gentle musician Manolo Diego Luna and the puffed-up soldier Joaquin Channing Tatum vie for the love of the beautiful Maria Zoe Saldana. This is not quite as chauvinistic as it sounds: Maria is not immediately won over by either of her suitors, and turns out to have an impressive skill-set of her own, including advanced-level fencing and kung fu.

The Nightmare Before Christmas has become a widely loved kids film, when it comes to celebrating Halloween. If things go the way they should, The Book of Life is in a nice position to become the film that represents Dia de los Muertos for kids, let alone brings it further into mainstream prominence. Director Jorge Guiterrez and his team, including producer Guillermo del Toro, have created a stylish, animated, adventure-romance, which is full of life. It is a bit odd to point that last part out, given that the film celebrates the Day of the Dead, but then again, there is a lot of odd charm in this film that may be overstuffed with ideas, but is so lighthearted and fun, it is easy to look over some minor flaws, when it comes down to supporting a nice little animated film such as this.

Should we be upset at the similarity between the films or is there a reason to celebrate them both? Some of you may remember the film Newt which was announced as being in development in April but ended up being canceled in While the rumor mill swirled, the reason turned out to be that Newt was deemed too similar to the film Rio , which was released in Films with similar themes are nothing new. Neither studio claimed plagiarism, but both shorts remain an amusing example of just how coincidentally similar productions can be.
But pressure from their families forces the three children onto different paths. Maria is sent to Europe, Joaquin joins the army, and Manolo becomes a bull fighter like his father. Many years later, when the children have grown up, Maria returns to town. Both Manolo and Joaquin love Maria and want to marry her. They both try to win her hand in marriage. Spirits Xibalba and La Muerte decide to bet on who will win.
From producer Guillermo del Toro and director Jorge Gutierrez comes an animated comedy with a unique visual style. Manolo Diego Luna comes from a family of bullfighters, though his true passion is music. Joaquin Channing Tatum comes from a family of military greats, and tries to lure Maria with his machismo and wealth. These kinds of things are complicated enough on their own, but other parties are hard at work pulling strings.
