Funko Hanna-Barbera Wacky Races Dorbz Ridez Muttley with Mean Machine Exclusive Vinyl Collectible

This Throwback Thursday offering features not only the complete Hanna-Barbera series but intriguing insight into the show. All right, here goes. Dick Dastardly? His sidekick Muttley? They never won a single Wacky Race.

The closest Dick Dastardly ever got to winning was a fourth place finish. His narcissism got in the way — he stopped to pose for photos before crossing the finish line.

The appeal of this set is obviously in the nostalgic value it possesses. As an example, look closely at the scenery in each episode. There are a lot of lush features and wily consideration put into them.

Each successive episode reveals added details about them, effectively bringing them to life. Both gentlemen also discuss details of the series in the extras found on the discs.

Only two are still around today — Waldo, who voiced the lovely Penelope Pitstop, and Stephenson, who not only spoke for several Wacky Races characters but is the singular voice of Mr. Slate from The Flintstones. Not only do these actors give specificity to the characters they play but they enhance the talents of the crew who visually fleshed them out.

Each is special and unique. It broke the fourth wall with characters talking to the narrator. Dastardly did this episode in and episode out. The extras in the set? This box set comes closed-captioned, in English, French and Spanish, subtitled, full color and with an aspect ratio of 1. The collection reviewed was originally released in with many other incarnations coming before it, but none of them as complete as this one. Big Voices. Little Censors. Wacky Races

What was my favorite episode? I have no idea. The original show has 11 competitors, which I will slot from worst to best. I would like to meet the child whose favorite Wacky Races character was Red Max, only so I could say I spoke to the most boring kid in the world.

It is worth noting that, if the scores were tallied, not on a point-based sysem, but according to the number of 1st-place finishes, with 2nd- and 3rd-place finishes used for breaking ties, then the all-time winner would be 7, the Bulletproof Bomb, followed by 5, the Compact Pussycat, with 9, the Turbo Teriffic in third place. And since the announcer sees and, well, announces every move the racers make, nobody would get away with winning by cheating anyway.

Hanna-Barbera: Wacky Races #1

In December of this yr, Warner Bros. Pictures will launch its newest Scooby-Doo movie, Scoob! Holiday Haunt , a sequel to the movie Scoob!

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland reminiscent of Mad Max , characters like Penelope Pitstop, Peter Perfect, and Dick Dastardly compete in a race against one another and the world itself. The series, written by Ken Pontac and featuring art by Leonardo Manco, is the most wildly different from its animated counterpart; even Scooby Apocalypse retained a sense of lightness, goofiness, and could at least in general be fun for the whole family. Wacky Raceland is very much a dark, violent take on the characters that's aimed pretty squarely at the direct market comic book audience. Pontac joined ComicBook. You can get the first issue on Wednesday at your local comic shop or pre-order it on ComiXology.

Like most Hanna-Barbera cartoons, the set-up of Wacky Races was "borrowed" from elsewhere — in this case, the Blake Edward movie The Great Race, which had come out three years earlier, chronicling a slapstick race across America, Asia and Europe back in the early days of automobiles. And it wasn't the first cartoon to rip off that premise — Jay Ward's Tom Slick, one of the back segments on George of the Jungle's show, beat this one onto the small screen by a year. Where Wacky Races outdid both was in having a large cast of colorful competitors, all designed by Jerry Eisenberg and Iwao Takamoto. Ring-a-Ding Convert-a-Car was driven by Prof. Meekly Paul Winchell, Gargamel in Smurfs.
