DCRB 2: The Atom vs Ant-Man

At the end of the film Ant Man , ex-con Scott Lang deliberately shrinks himself to a sub-atomic level in order to save his daughter Cassie. We attempted to try and uncover the physics of the quantum realm and understand what Scott would see.

To do this we first have to understand the physics of Antman. The character of Scott Lang is portrayed by the actor Paul Rudd whose weight and height is approximately 80kg and cm respectively. His density would also just increase more and more the further he shrunk. So how small can Scott truly go? The Schwarzschild radius is the radius any massive object has to be in order for it to have a large enough gravity to trap light.

Every planet and moon is said to have an escape velocity. This is the minimum velocity required for an object like a rocket to escape the gravity of the planet. So if a planet got denser its escape velocity would increase. The collapsing planet is now called a black hole. The planet would continue to collapse further and further whilst retaining the same Schwarzschild radius.

Ant man himself has his own Schwarzschild radius. The calculation for this is shown below. If Ant man could shrink to this point, he would then become a black hole. Note that the Schwarzschild radius of Ant man is actually smaller than the Bohr radius. This is the most probable distance between the nucleus and the electron in a hydrogen atom. So, assuming Ant man can some how keep physically in tact in the shrinking process big assumption, I know then he would be able to see atoms on his journey down the rabbit hole.

Lets take a moment to remind ourselves of the scenario at the end of Ant man. In doing so he loses control and shrinks seemingly forever. So his daughter watches him shrink into nothingness. Below is an example of Ant Man shrinking earlier in the movie. So in this example he shrinks from a height of cm but stops at 0. As you can see, there is a moment where he hangs in the air before falling into the bath tub.

He would stay the same size and rest of the room around him would be expanding in size. So the floor beneath his feet would drop out but also the ceiling above him would get higher and higher.

When considering what Ant Man would see, we note that this is speculative. There is still competing areas of theoretical physics, that discuss the nature of the particle scale, that are waiting for experimentation.

As Ant Man shrinks forever, he sees the room around him expand outwards as everything gets larger. He may be able to see microorganisms in the air grow in size and expand ever further. After this point he enters an atomic level. Would he be able to see atoms in the air grow in size around him? Firstly we need to ask the question what is the average distance between molecules in air. This is a difficult question however we approach it via a couple of approximations below.

So when Ant Man gets to a scale of 0. Go back and look at the Bohr radius diagram and compare that to the diameter of the hydrogen nucleus. So Ant Man with a height shrinking towards 0. However at this point in his descent he might notice something. When electrons come near each other its possible for them to transfer a particle of light called a photon between them. So if the particle of light happens to travel towards Ant Man, he may see these electron interactions.

If Ant Man is lucky he might be very close to a nucleus expanding near him in size. What would this look like? This is a difficult question to answer.

Spectroscopy is essentially a process of firing and reflecting light off atoms and seeing the difference between the emitted light and the reflected light. What we would see from the reflected light would in theory be exactly what Ant Man would see with his eyes. At this point he enters a subatomic level.

There are subatomic particles like the electron and quarks. So our hero Ant Man is now on an eternal journey into nothingness until he himself becomes a black hole. John Wheeler was a physicist known for his work on black holes. Up to now we are assuming that gravity behaves the same on the subatomic level to how it does between planets, which is a big assumption. The truth is the study of the behaviour of gravity at a particle level, or quantum gravity , is still an allusive matter of debate today.

Gravity on a macroscopic level works by bending otherwise uniform space. So the Earth bends the space around it and as a result the moon then rolls along the bent space. Mass tells space to bend and bent space tells mass how to move. So without any mass the space would be completely uniform in every direction. John Wheeler said that even though this is the case at the macroscopic level why does it have to be at the subatomic level?

In this idea space is very irregular at constantly shifting at a subatomic level, like the bubbling foam in your cup of coffee. If this was the case what would our shrinking hero see? But he would feel a lot of pain. It is difficult to say precisely what Ant Man might see as he gets smaller and smaller. The answer to the question what would Ant Man see is ultimate asking fundamentally the nature of the very small.

So its an answer that may likely change in the future. Everything that you know, and love, gone forever. Back To Top. Like this: Like Loading By continuing to use this website, you agree to their use.

Ant-Man (MCU) vs the Atom (CW)

Shrinking ourselves down to the size of an ant has long been a popular theme in science fiction. But how realistic is this? Have these movies portrayed the science of small correctly, or are there scientific issues far beyond what is portrayed on the silver screen? Imagine I make a giant cube out of inflated balloons, like the size of a building.

Spyridon Michalakis, the science adviser for "Ant-Man" and The nice thing about this muonic matter is that the atoms would be times.

So What Exactly Is A Subatomic State?

Just because they shrink doesn't mean they can't save the day. Ant-Man and Atom both prove that you can pack a big punch as a tiny specimen. Rudd took the popularity of Ant-Man to the next level with his portrayal of the smartly ant-wielding hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Atom is a scientist. Although he doesn't use ants or any other insect gimmick, he shrinks and uses science to save the day. Who's the ultimate shrinking superhero? He shrinks and he increases size. No matter what—he's strong and gets the job done. TeamAtom because he's played by Brandon Routh—a DC legend at this point—and he's a super awesome scientist who shrinks without needing the gimmick of an insect.

Usually a comic book writer is encouraged to think big in the process of creating a new superhero. However, both DC and Marvel each have a character that is a stark contrast to this mantra. I am, of course, talking about Ant-Man and The Atom. While Ant-Man has the ability to shrink down to microscopic size while maintaining the same mass, The Atom has the ability to shrink down to microscopic size while maintaining the same ma… Hmmm… Well, it would appear that these two fun-sized, costumed heroes are a perfect match and more so than, perhaps, any of the comic book characters we have pitted against each other thus far. For such small heroes, deciding the winner to this latest hypothetical battle just may be my biggest undertaking yet.

Moments before Scott is kidnapped by Hope and Hank Pym Michael Douglas , his boredom sees him watching National Lampoon's comedy classic Animal House, and director Peyton Reed clearly chose a very specific scene from the movie to feature for a few brief seconds. The scene in question sees Pinto Thomas Hulce hitting a joint with Professor Dave Jennings Donald Sutherland , when we hear Pinto talk about the nature of the universe. He says, "That means that one tiny atom in my fingernail could be Given the movie's obvious focus on atom-sized shenanigans and the Quantum Realm, it's hard to imagine a better-fitting pop-culture reference, really. After many years of development, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is finally getting the chance to suit up as a supervillain in Black Adam , which has is nearing the end of production. Not only will the film bring the Shazam villain to the big screen for the first time, but it will also introduce a multitude of various superheroes to the DCEU. Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan will also be starring as the mystic Doctor Fate, who teased that his superhero costume will be fully mo-capped. Now yet another character with a heroic past has joined the super-powered roster, one who has a notable connection to a member of the Justice Society Black Adam appears to be highlighting many of DC's superheroes from the s Golden Age of comics, with Al Pratt being yet another central figure from that era. In the comics, Pratt is the first character to use the moniker of The Atom, who initially had no powers at all and was used instead as a bruiser, tough guy-type of character. The Atom would eventually gain the ability to enhance his punches with radioactive energy and was also immune to some forms of radiation.

His superpowers are unlike any and it's not a surprise that he plays a huge role in the outcome of many wars that the Avengers have engaged in since their inception. Another superhero who is known for possessing quite similar superpowers to Ant-Man comes from the DC Universe and his name is the Atom. Unsurprisingly, there have been numerous debates among fans imagining what would happen if Ant-Man and the Atom fought in a one-on-one battle. The most obvious superpower that Ant-Man holds over Atom is the ability to telepathically communicate with ants. This would come in very handy in the battle, especially when Atom has the upper hand over Ant-Man.

So the theory is that in reality Ant man could destroy the world just for trying to save his little daughter.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall—and every hero matters, no matter how small! Star City is riddled with crime—and equally as populous, a crowd of heroes seeking to stop them. From the Green Arrow to Black Canary, even the most mild mannered of businessmen could have a double life of extinguishing evil. A brilliant CEO who wanted in on the action did so by utilizing his brilliant mind and engineering skills. With his size altering exosuit, Ray Palmer would become the Atom.

I tend to think of Marvel comics as more scientific and DC comics as more mythological. But it just seems like Marvel stories, particularly in the films, really hone in on science fiction elements. Take Ant-Man, for example.
