The protagonist is Aoyama, a precocious fourth grader who keeps notes every day of new things he learns.

I had hoped to get around to writing about them on Twitter in the past, but never got around to it. All of which have an animated adaptation. Other than scribbling down detailed notes and drawing on grid paper to record his findings about the world around him like a true scientist, Aoyama is a fourth grader living in a residential suburb. When he sees a group of penguins hanging out in the middle of town, he is eager to solve the mystery. Penguin Highway was not created in mind as a family film but it does a nice job of being a summer coming-of-age adventure. I appreciate how it blends fantasy and realism without being too wholesome or too cute. Although Aoyama presents himself as mature and eloquent, he acts his age by tricking a school bully into believing that bad oral hygiene practices would lead to a premature death by an imaginary disease with a straight face or sticking out his tongue in disgust after swallowing gulps of bitter black coffee.

Penguin Highway (2018)
RELATED VIDEO: Emperor Penguin HighwayAs fourth grade has just ended and summer vacations are upon him, he has to face a number of adventures. The second revolves around a dentist assistant quoted as One-san in the film he has befriended, who teaches him how to play chess and Aoyama seems to have a crush on along with a tendency to stare at her boobs. The last one involves Hamamoto, the best chess player in the classroom, who, after being beaten from Aoyama, reveals a discovery of her own in a valley hidden near the town, and also her feelings for our young hero. As a bubble made of sea starts threatening the whole area, the origin and purpose of the penguins takes a completely different meaning, while a love triangle is shaped and a number of characters reveal their true nature. Hiroyasu Ishida directs an anime in the style mostly established by the aforementioned in the prologue, mixing fantasy with reality, through a story mostly involving children but actually carrying messages that are addressed to adults. The coming-of-age aspect is the basic one, mostly revolving around love and maturing through consequences; however, the element that steals the show is how Ishida portrays the scientific procedure through the inquiring minds of his young characters, who, in this aspect, appear much more mature than their age suggests.
The film, produced by Studio Colorido and directed by Hiroyasu Ishida might superficially appear as a frivolous kids movie about Antarctic birds. However, there is much more at play here that even anime newcomers will value. The film establishes its odd premise during the opening credits as penguins inexplicably totter through the streets of a Japanese suburb, while the charming piano-led soundtrack creates a sweet and cheerful atmosphere. After the penguins are gathered and loaded into a rescue van, we are then introduced to protagonist Aoyama, a smart, science-orientated boy with a slightly inflated ego that has the audience chortling. In this respect, much of Penguin Highway will be lost on younger viewers even many older ones. The animation itself keeps us captivated, too.
She takes his affection in stride by chastising his infatuation with her breasts the blatant lecherous gaze of children in recent anime is disturbing and always looks forward to his company on the other side of a chessboard. Penguins have suddenly arrived in their fields, waddling their way along a path towards the forest. She buys a can of soda upon freeing him and eventually throws it into the air to watch it impossibly transform into a penguin.
Well done, the remarkable idea and is timely
