Like any other storytelling medium, at times, anime's stories, characters, and their relationships can get offensive. Due to this, anime fans would certainly be the first to say that just because a show is animated that does not mean it is child-friendly. Yeah, this one is pretty fucked up. I am… unsure how to really feel about this movie. I feel like there are a lot of things, both good and bad that I can say about Midori , and a lot of different ways it can be interpreted. The main reason why this anime tends to be so widely hated, and why it was even banned in Japan as well as having some of the footage completely destroyed and thus lost forever, is because of just how disturbing it is.

Prior to watching my first anime, which was Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood , I had no idea that animation could go to the lengths that this show was going in terms of content and quality. Granted I was fourteen when I first saw the show, so my worldview of animation was limited.
Like her European equivalent, the Shoujo Tsubaki was typically a lower class innocent who finds herself first thrown into the degrading profession of selling flowers on the street and then cast down even further by being sold to a travelling freakshow revue. This particular version of the story is best known thanks to the infamous ero-guro manga by Suehiro Maruo, Mr. Fourteen year old Midori Risa Nakamura narrates the tale as she suffers at the hands of the freaks and performers who form the community she has become a less than willing member of. Her biggest problem is the effeminate gay showman, Kanabun Takeru , who actively enjoys tormenting her even going so far as to kick her pet puppies to death and feed them to her in a stew. This being a fairly incestuous environment, everyone is having sex with everyone else all the time which is not an ideal environment for a dreamy and sheltered fourteen year old. Not a naturalistic recreation of early Showa decadence, Midori: The Camelia Girl evokes the spirit of the period with its surreal atmosphere and outlandish costuming. Midori dresses in the bright and innocent clothes of a little girl making her look something like a cartoon heroine though her sunniness contrasts nicely with the sometimes muted dinginess of the street performer world.
While anime is super entertaining and fun to watch, it can get quite crazy and questionable. Yes, anime is animated but the content is mature. From violence to incest and other controversial issues, anime can be offensive sometimes. Due to this, some countries have banned anime shows for its viewers — especially for younger audiences.
