Remember me. Previous Share Flag Next. Alvin and the Chipmunks are once again in the public eye for, what, the third or fourth time? These squeaky-voiced rodents started out as a curious novelty act who should by all accounts have had a short while in the public eye and then be forgotten about, but they refused to do anything of the sort, hanging onto the spotlight for as long as possible -- and if they let go of it for a while and drop out of the public image for a while, it's just so they can go reinvent themselves and make a comeback a few years later.

You gotta admire the persistence, if nothing else. The critics certainly don't admire anything else, especially when it comes to the new movies.

Now, a lot can be said and a lot has been said about the trio, but the one I'd like to focus on right now is the tallest, brainiest -- and for a lot of the Chipmunks' careers, most overlooked of the three -- namely Simon.

And why Simon? Well, to be completely honest, the blue-wearing bespectacled one was never a particular favorite of mine, chipmunk-wise. But he is perhaps the most interesting to look at, when going through the several decades and incarnations of the Chipmunks, in that he's the one who changes and develops the most over the years, both in character and in overall role in the group.

To demonstrate what I mean, I think we'll have to go through a bit of Chipmunk history: The Chipmunks, for those who have forgotten, started out as a novelty record act by Ross Bagdasarian, who in , under his stage name "Dave Seville," got a hit going with the song The Witch Doctor which was the first time he used the infamous "speed up the recording to create a squeaky voice" technique. Deciding that the high-pitched voice singing in harmony with his normal voice was funny enough to pursue, he followed up with Bird on My Head, with the squeaky voice now being done by the bird in question.

And then, just in time for Christmas the same year, came The Chipmunk Song, where the squeaky voices was now used for three distinct characters, the chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore all voiced by Bagdasarian himself , who not only sang but interacted and argued with his Dave Seville persona.

It was a huge hit, probably because the three chipmunks had personalities -- Simon was the more professional of them, Theodore mainly giggled, and Alvin stole the show by missing his cue, then shouting "Okay!

Neither, for that matter, does Theodore, who just giggles This trend continued over the next few Chipmunk songs and with Dave Seville and the Chipmunks' appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, where the Chipmunks were represented by puppets, and Alvin for some reason tried to hit Ed Sullivan over the head with a hammer, showing a disturbingly violent attitude that he seems to have lost since , and when the trio got their first animated cartoon in , they weren't even trying to pretend anymore: The cartoon was simply called The Alvin Show.

And yes, Alvin is the strongest personality of the trio, especially in these early years. Where Simon and Theodore usually try to do as they're told, Alvin's the egomaniac rascal who insists on doing things his own way.

So he gets almost all the solo numbers, he's the one getting yelled at by Dave the most, and he's consequently the one the audience loves. In the cartoon which unlike the later cartoon, is a bit of an anarchistic and often surreal Vaudeville-type show, a far cry from the cozy "single parent family" setting from the eighties Alvin gets the brunt of the attention and most of the funny lines.

Simon and Theodore usually either go along with him on the trips of mischief, or they stand aside in the background and behave while Alvin does something solo. The cartoon does, however, start something for Theodore, who -- while not really moving out of Alvin's shadow -- begins developing an identity of his own. From being the "giggler" of the group, his personality broadens a little, and he consequently becomes the chubby, cuddly and loveable one, who occasionally provides comedy moments by accidentally screwing things up, or heartfelt moments when he bonds with a cute puppy or kitten.

That leaves Simon. Who gets nothing whatsoever. While Alvin steals the show and Theodore gets the occasional attention-worthy moment, Simon gets nothing. Over the twenty-six episodes of The Alvin Show, he remains just "the third Chipmunk.

In fact, he doesn't really say or do anything that makes him stand out. He's just The show would have played out almost exactly the same without him. I heard rumors that Ross Bagdasarian used to receive quite a bit of fan mail for Alvin and Theodore, but nothing for Simon. I don't know if this is true or not, but I can readily believe it -- nothing I've managed to find of the "old-style" Chipmunks features any good material for Simon.

Even if he does get a brief moment, he does nothing with it, and he's usually only used as "set-up" along with Theodore for Alvin's comedy bit -- or more rarely and usually only in the cartoon, seldom in the records as "set-up" along with Alvin for Theodore's comedy bit.

Simon in the sixties and seventies was nobody's favorite Chipmunk, and he did nothing to try and change this. In , Ross Bagdasarian died, and since he was essentially both Dave and all the Chipmunks, things got quiet on the Chipmunk front It's cutesy and sentimental, and not really very heavy on the laughs -- a far cry from the original Alvin Show and from Jones's old Warner Brothers cartoons -- but features some good animation and neat visuals. And, at one point, pink elephants dressed as reindeer.

The redesigned Chipmunks sound and act pretty much like they did in the old cartoon though with an undertone of Christmas sentimentality , but they're much, much cuter and more cuddly-looking. Once again, the entire thing centers on Alvin, with Simon and Theodore playing backup, so there's really not a lot to be said for Simon here that hasn't already been said about him -- except that this special is the only time in Chipmunk history where Simon's glasses are not stiff and round at all times but change with his expression.

They must be special Chuck Jones glasses or something. Too bad he didn't get to keep them, because they did look kinda nice. The new cartoon took Jones's version of the Chipmunks and redesigned them again back to the stiff, round glasses for Simon , maybe for easier animation purposes.

The show's art style would evolve over the years, and the Chipmunks impossibly enough ended up looking even cuter than under Jones. Curiously enough, Alvin and Theodore changed heights -- Alvin had always been the smallest of the trio, but now it looks like he's hit a growth spurt, leaving Theodore the smallest one.

The reason for this couldn't be more clear: Theodore is the cute, cuddly one, so of course he also has to be the smallest. As for Simon, it seems he took this new TV series as a start for something new, because the s Chipmunks, apart from a few superfluous similarities, don't really have all that much in common with the old ones. The "singing chipmunks" part was played down; really in most of the episodes they don't even do much on-screen singing, the musical numbers being limited to chipmunky versions of contemporary pop songs playing over montage scenes.

Usually they're presented more as normal schoolchildren, or at least cartoon versions of normal schoolchildren. The bad news was that there was much less comedic mischief and driving Dave up the wall and a lot more moralizing, but the good news is that the Chipmunks themselves got more individual personalities and were allowed to play off each other in more ways than simply "Simon and Theodore are Alvin's accomplishes.

Simon seems to have realized that with Alvin being the "selfish jerk" comedian and Theodore the "naive and klutzy" comedian, and Dave being the yelling authority figure, he'd be best used as the "straight man" of the group. Like Bert of Sesame Street, however, he simply decided to make the "straight man" schtick his comedy thing. And so, from being the one to stand in the background, Simon changed to become the responsible and sensible one, who would not only actively oppose Alvin's harebrained schemes, but also make numerous sarcastic remarks about how stupid Alvin was.

In fact, Simon very quickly became the one with the best lines on the show. The s Chipmunks were rarely as funny as their s selves, though they sometimes did have their moments, but the dialogue often seemed a little extra inspired on Simon's part. Maybe he used it as an outlet for supposedly being the most serious character in a show that was markedly less funny than its predecessor.

One area where the s show did shine, though, was when it went into dream sequences that parodied and spoofed well-known movies and TV series. The 80s Chipmunks were never better than when doing spoofs, and it seems like the writers understood this as well, what with how many of these spoofs they managed to cram into each season, and finally gave up all pretense and made the eighth and final season of the show completely based around doing movie spoofs.

What's interesting about this is that in these movie spoofs, Simon would occasionally be found playing the villain. And unlike the one time Alvin played a villain, when it was made a big deal out of the fact that Alvin was the bad guy in the episode he was the Joker in a Batman parody, fittingly with Simon as Batman Simon's villain role was played with no fanfare and no fuss.

And interestingly enough, he worked perfectly as the villain, in spite of being the least troublesome of the Chipmunks in the normal continuity. I'd make a remark here about that old "it's the quiet ones you should watch out for" saying, except Simon isn't particularly quiet The s chipmunks kept going into the 90s and part of the s with token record releases and a few direct-to-video movies where they met or in some cases didn't meet various classic horror story creatures and characters.

The movie -- which just about every single critic has slaughtered, not without a bit of justification -- does deserve a bit of credit for trying to go back to the old image of the Chipmunks as a novelty act, letting them return more to their original incarnation as mischief-makers, while keeping true to the s personalities of the characters.

Even the move towards making them more like actual chipmunks is a throwback to the very first days, where they appeared as tiny chipmunk puppets who tried hitting Ed Sullivan on the head. Problem is that instead of being content with mixing the best of the old and the new, the movie also insists on throwing in some "edgy," gross-out humor with farting and pooping, and a Jason Lee who seems to spend every single on-screen moment desperately wishing that he hadn't agreed to take this role.

Listen to the re-recording of The Chipmunk Song for the movie and compare it to the original from Where Bagdasarian Sr. Pretty telling that Dave barely appears in the second live-action movie. Then again, the first movie did open with the Chipmunks singing a pretty neat a capella version of Bad Day, so I'm actually willing to forgive it a whole lot.

This was purely so the movie could have some celebrity names to put on the movie posters, of course; with the high-speed squeaks of the Chipmunks you could have just about anyone with the possible exception of James Earl Jones voice them, and they'd sound more or less exactly the same. There's not really much left to say about this new Simon that couldn't have been said of the s one, apart from the fact that he's, well, much more of a chipmunk.

And such is the story of Simon, going from being merely "the third chipmunk," to the alleged smart one who never actually showed any smarts, to the fully-developed sarcastic intellectual we know from the s and onward, which several people I've seen them online, at least!
