Old king cole silly symphony

I still like your blog the best. I love 30's cartoons and you know your stuff. Some of my favorite cartoons are Color Classics. Maltin's book was my bible growing up. Now after finally getting to watch many of the cartoons he wrote about I realize just how off the mark he was lol. My favorite Color Classic story.

The Silly Symphony Project

Just not a terribly memorable short. Nothing that sets it apart from various other silly symphonies. I don't mind focusing more on music than story occasionally if its done creatively either through interesting themes and sequences or through an exercise in progressive animation techniques. Unfortunately this one had neither of those things.

Silly Symphony was a series of animated short films produced by Walt Disney Productions from to To keep costs down Disney produced his own music. Disney's first music director and composer was Carl Stalling. In the studio produced its first cartoon in Technicolor, Flowers and Trees. This record was matched only by Tom and Jerry. The series spawned numerous imitators and competitors.

Old King Cole

No matter what the premise of anything called Ten Little Indians , it is all based on death, murder or genocide, and in the end the Indians are all going to die. Something that children play, so why change it or argue over it? As originally outlined in an opinion piece by Julianne Jennings, the rhyme was written by noted American songwriter Septimus Winner in or and performed at minstrel shows. It was then adapted in by Frank J. Green as Ten Little Niggers and became a standard of the blackface minstrel shows in England and America.

Silly Symphony Concert

Both cartoons feature nursery rhyme characters singing and dancing. Although King Cole himself still has the same design he had in the earlier cartoon, the complete short shows an enormous progress in animation, which is elaborate and fluent throughout. Indeed, at times it is even reminiscent of the musicals of the era.

It was directed by David Hand and released on July 29, It's a semi-remake of the Silly Symphony short Mother Goose Melodies , but in color, with more details and technically advanced animation. Other nursery rhyme books do the same thing, and several famous characters leave their homes and go to Old King Cole's party. There, all the characters have a small sing-and-dance act. When the Ten Little Indians get on the stage, their dance is so catchy that Old King Cole and all the other characters join in as well.

A bunch of other nursery rhyme characters then come out of their storybooks such as Little Boy Blue, Old Mother Hubbard, the Crooked Man, the old woman who lived in a shoe…etc. All in all, this short was nearly exactly the same as the other one until about five minutes in, where things get a bit…weird. And what can I really say?
