GTO: 14 Days in Shonan, Volume 1 (Great Teacher Onizuka)

Twenty-two-year-old Eikichi Onizuka—ex-biker gang leader, conqueror of Shonan, and virgin—has a dream: to become the greatest high school teacher in all of Japan. This isn't because of a passion for teaching, but because he wants a loving teenage wife when he's old and gray. Still, for a perverted, greedy, and lazy delinquent, there is more to Onizuka than meets the eye. So when he lands a job as the homeroom teacher of the Class at the prestigious Holy Forest Academy—despite suplexing the Vice Principal—all of his talents are put to the test, as this class is particularly infamous. Due to their utter contempt for all teachers, the class' students use psychological warfare to mentally break any new homeroom teacher they get, forcing them to quit and leave school. However, Onizuka isn't your average teacher, and he's ready for any challenge in his way.

Nerdy Talk Episode 3: A Bubblegum Snow Crisis

Fujisawa does a pretty good job balancing the more saccharine elements of the series with the knock-down, drag-out, somewhat perverted jokes. All throughout college, I plowed my way through the series… All was well and good, until just the other day, when Vertical dropped the first volume of Great Teacher Onizuka: 14 Days in Shonan in my mailbox… Suffice to say, the first chapter grabbed me almost immediately. It was the same Great Teacher Onizuka humor I remember, and most importantly, I reacted the same to it as I had when I was stuck in my college dorm on those long Syracuse winter nights. Luckily the premise is pretty simple… I liken this book to Columbo. Anyone who has ever watched a Columbo episode knows that Columbo is going to solve the case.

Well-made shonen anime or shounen anime , as it is sometimes spelled tend to be massive hits — just look at Attack on Titan or Dragon Ball. Shonen is also a demographic rather than a traditional genre, so it covers a wide spectrum of shows.

GTO is an excellent and very addictive series. The first book, like the first episode of the anime, resembles a pilot episode that launches the idea for the series without starting its main plotline. It is twenty five volumes long and does become somewhat formulaic towards the end, but I did not realize this until it was pointed out to me. I must have enjoyed the formula. This is a great manga series for anybody who likes the comedy or slice of life genre. For those of you who aren't fans of these genres, this is still a good manga. Beware once you start reading!
