Mulan the cartoon

Like Fox's "Anastasia,'' this is a film that adults can enjoy on their own, without feeling an obligation to take along kids as a cover. The story this time isn't a retread of a familiar Western children's classic, but based on a Chinese folk tale about a plucky Chinese teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy to fight the invading Huns. When the invaders and their implacable leader Shan-Yu who looks alarmingly like Karl Malone sweep down on the Chinese Wall, the Emperor calls up all able men to defend the kingdom. Mulan's father is old and feeble, but throws away his crutch to volunteer. To spare him, Mulan steals the family sword, summons the family ancestors for aid, and secretly goes in his place.

Commentary: I watched the animated ‘Mulan’ for the first time in 2020. I wish I liked it

I have been doing a LOT of writing, and a lot of that writing has been screenwriting. Screenwriting involves a lot of studying of movies and their structure. I started this blog to recap and write about animated movies, both good and bad, but to understand why a movie is good or bad, we have to understand why it works.

Movies are like machines, with specific moving parts that need to be moved at the right time, or else the machine will completely fall apart. All good movies follow the exact same structure, no matter the genre. They do. Mulan is a great example of good screenplay structure. First of all, there has to be a problem for the main character to struggle against.

No conflict? Who cares, why are we watching this again? Second, there must be high stakes and a sense of urgency. Oh no! Your LIFE? Or he just wants your TV? See which one is more interesting for the viewer? They are:. Our opening image is a soldier on the Great Wall of China. In one glance, this tells the audience where we are, and around what time period.

Not modern times! A soldier - this shows that soldiers or an army will play a larger part later on. From the previous exchange at the Wall, we know Shan Yu has invaded China. An overarcing conflict has been set up in the first two minutes of the movie. We meet our main character, Mulan. We learn that she is due to meet the matchmaker in order to be matched up with a husband, as that is the way honor is brought to a family in the case of a woman.

It is important to note that when we meet the main character, it is important that they do something to make us like them, to make us sympathize with them, otherwise the audience will be lost in the first few minutes of the movie. Mulan finds a creative way to do chores and cheats on her matchmaking test by writing on her arm, but she makes us like her through her caring interactions with her wounded father.

She is a scatterbrain, but not when it comes to her father. Since this is a Disney movie, the central theme is conveyed through song. The catalyst is usually what launches the character into the main conflict. In Mulan, the army rides into town with conscription notices.

Since Fa Zhu is the only man in the Fa family, he is summoned to the army, despite the fact he is injured and has to walk with a cane.

Mulan spies on him and sees that there is no way he would be able to fight in the army and live to tell about it. But what can she do? This is an example of upping the stakes.

It has been established that her father is very loving to her, and she in turn cares very deeply for him. She has to do something, right? The debate is concluded from a seriously badass scene that I always remember from the trailer: Mulan makes up her mind, sitting on a dragon statue in the rain. With that, we…. We break into Act 2 with Grandma sounding the alarm that Mulan has gone to join the army. Fa Zhu lets us know that if Mulan is discovered, she will be put to death.

Here the stakes are raised again. If it is discovered that Mulan is a woman, what will happen? Will she be sent home? Maybe slapped on the wrist? This has established that there is no going backward and no help for Mulan - she must go forward. There are actually two B stories in Mulan. These are the stories of the secondary characters, often a love interest, or the story of the friend.

All characters in a successful screenplay must want something, and the B story characters are no different. He wants to help Mulan get a medal so that he can get his pedestal back in the family temple. This is where we see Mulan struggle to fit in as a man. And she DOES struggle - which is another important point. Would watching Mulan climb up that giant pole be as satisfying if she had walked right into the camp at the beginning and beat everyone up and been better than everyone at martial arts and fishing and whatever else?

Of course not! We want Mulan to win, but we want to see her struggle to get there. An interesting thing I noticed, however, was that although Mulan was dealing with hiding her identity as a woman, she was not struggling alone throughout her training. Do you think her army buddies would be as loyal to her towards the end if she had shown them all up at the very beginning of training? We also get funny scenes involving naked men at the swimming hole, Mulan being stuck having to hear what kind of women the other men like, etc etc.

This is the halfway mark of the movie. And the line between the Fun and Games section and the Midpoint of the movie is very clearly defined in Mulan. One second, the men are happily singing and about to pelt Mulan with snowballs, the next, there is a completely destroyed village in front of them.

The music dies away. We have hit the midpoint. Well gee, that sucks. The bad guys are literally closing in as the troops find themselves surrounded by Huns who have the high ground.

Look at the scale of them! Luckily, through bravery and luck, Mulan and her troops manage to beat back the Huns by causing them to be buried in an avalanche, and even though Mulan was hurt during a scuffle with Shan Yu, they beat the enemy back! Things will probably be okay now, right? They discover Mulan is a girl while dealing with her wounds. Kind of - the army abandons them in the snow, meaning Mulan will most likely freeze to death anyway.

Abandoned to freeze to death on a mountain top, Mulan laments her decision. She has to do something, which means it is time to…. Mulan tries to warn people, but she is a woman again, and nobody will listen to her.

Huns pop out of the Chinese dragon and kidnap the emperor. Mulan realizes that being an invisible woman is exactly what she needs at that particular moment, and in a role reversal, gets her army buddies to pretend to be women in order to enter the palace. Mulan saves the day, now knowing who she is and having the courage to defeat Shan Yu as a woman and not have to hide behind a false identity as a man.

Act three should always be about giving a character courage to do something that they would never be able to do in Act one. Mulan returns to her father under the cherry blossom tree. He reveals that having Mulan as a daughter was honor enough.

Mushu gets his pedestal back for helping Mulan save China - and the ancestors celebrate while Mulan and Mushu grin at the family temple. Thus i found your blog and wanted to ask you, where you think the initial 'save the cat' moment in Mulan was. In my opinion it would be the moment, where Mulan shows her 'different personality' compared to other girls in her village, when she was on her way to the marriage counselor Im hyped to hear your answer :D.

Oooh interesting question. Mulan takes the doll back from the boys and gives it to the little girl. I love Spongebob Squarepants. Here is a list of the best Spongebob jokes in my opinion.

Ranked for humor, quotability, intelligence, and voice acting delivery. RIP Mr. Hillenburg, you helped shape my sense of humor. Yes, this time Hey Arnold himself is getting the turkey treatment. Anyway, the city is preparing for Thanksgiving as Arnold rides his bike past a recreation of the Mayflower ship that is about to set sail. Although this seems like sort of a cool idea, it also seems like a bad idea. Did they retro-fit an existing ship, or did they somehow build a Mayflower ship from scratch?

The closest thing we did was color in some cornucopias and read books about turkeys that ran away from farms or whatever. Simmons seems to have penned this particular play himself, and this dude seriously needs to chill. Not to mention the dialogue is so maudlin and sweet it just makes you want to barf. Simmons should definitely keep to teaching and stay away from play authorship. The play ends, Mr. Simmons sheds a tear Dude.

20 Years Later, What Do We Do With Mulan In 2018?

You can read our spoiler-free review of the film here. Here are all of the differences and similarities between the animated Disney Mulan and the live-action adaptation. In the previous Disney live-action remakes I have seen Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin , the film stuck closely to the original animated feature. While both added complexities to the characters and subplots, which helped to justify their slightly-long runtimes and got rid of some of the handwavium that viewers accept in animated features , the resulting features felt very much like the classic animated film. Rather than keeping the film as close to the original as possible, the creative team seems to have asked what would happen if the original Mulan had come to theaters after audiences were already familiar with the conceits of the wuxia film genre.

To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China's greatest heroines in the process.

The new 'Mulan': What's different in Disney's live-action remake (from no Mushu to more hair)?

It's been 22 years since Mulan first got down to business and defeated those pesky - and very sun-deprived - Huns spoiler there, but hey if you haven't seen where have you been? The original Mulan was released in , bringing with it Mushu, voiced by Eddie Murphy, and the female lead we all needed. Mulan is the eighth Disney princess and the second not based on a fairy tale character, which definitely puts her among our favourites. She's actually based on a Chinese folk tale about Hua Mulan. While there were some crucial changes made by Disney the new remake looks to be more in line with the tale. Mulan sees our hero disguising herself up as a male soldier and taking her father's place in the Chinese army when he's called upon to fight the Huns. To get you ready for the Mulan remake we've rounded up some must-know facts about the animation. Let's get this one out of the way. We would be the first to add our hero to any princess list diversity and all but she's not actually a princess. Mulan joins the army and then was honoured by the Emperor so only becomes a 'sort of princess', but she has no title.

Walt Disney Pictures recently released its live-action Mulan , an adaptation of the animated feature. One of the artists at Walt Disney Animation Studios who was part of the digital production team responsible for this work was artistic supervisor Eric Guaglione , now an animation supervisor at Framestore. Which of course was not really true. If you look at the ballroom sequence in Beauty and the Beast or the wildebeest stampeded in The Lion King , there was much more to it in terms of creative input. By the time Mulan was in production, I think there was a greater acceptance for how CG could not only just help achieve work really difficult and laborious to do, but also changing the thinking to, how do we actually use CG in a way that ultimately has an overall effect on the movie itself in terms of the look and feel?

Mulan- The Greatest Honor

Let me preface this blog post by saying that this is one of my all time favorite Disney movies, so pretty much none of the following are really my beliefs. But it was fun to put on such a negative attitude while watching the movie. First off, this film is certainly a lot darker than the average animated Disney flick. It opens with the murder of a nameless soldier and the invasion of China. The entire film is about war.

Walt Disney Pictures recently released its live-action Mulan, an adaptation of the animated feature. Back around the time of the.

‘Mulan’ 1998: A Moment of Joy and Anxiety for Asian-American Viewers

Fa Mulan is a girl, the only child of her honored family. When the Huns invade China, one man from every family is called to arms. The ancestors awake and decide to send Mushu, a little dishonored dragon to aid Mulan in her quest. Weeks later, Mulan and the other troopers have survived the training camp and are on the way north to stop the Huns.

Disney’s Animated Mulan Star Reacts to Live-Action Remake

Kung Fu Mulan, the Chinese-produced animated Mulan movie, has been pulled from movie theatres in China just three days after release because it flopped so badly. The Chinese box office is ruthless — movies that open with low box office takings are often yanked from the theatres two or three days after release. The holiday week is considered a major box office opportunity for homegrown movies, next to Chinese New Year. Kung Fu Mulan , which opened last weekend, was touted by its studio Gold Valley Films, as more culturally authentic than Disney's recent live-action version. They said they believed Chinese audiences would find it more appealing than the Disney movie. Kung Fu Mulan was widely panned on Chinese social media review site Douban , which has become the country's equivalent of Rotten Tomatoes and Cinemascore.

No Mushu does not have a cameo , but another key figure from Mulan before this does. There's still plenty of nods to the classic version we spotted, you can follow along below:.

Let's Talk Cartoons! — Animated Beat Sheet: Mulan

BD Wong, who starred as the speaking voice of Chinese army captain Li Shang in 's animated Mulan , says he feels "no ownership" over the cherished Disney film that inspired a coming live-action remake. It was one of the last movies they made where they actually drew the pictures, it was at the frontier of a time when Asian-American actors claiming Asian roles in voiceover became a thing. In a way that was really foreign to people before that, to have so many of the lead parts in that movie be played by Asian actors. When Wong's co-star Wen reacted to Yifei's casting in , she said the Chinese-American star is "beautiful" and "perfect" for the role. Me and Lea Solanga [Mulan's singing voice] created this beautiful image with the animators and Disney back in the day, before even CGI was a big thing I'm very proud of the continued legacy. I hope that they do it justice.

The CG side of the animated ‘Mulan’

It was directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft in The movie was based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, and was Disney's 36th animated feature and the ninth animated film produced and released during the Disney Renaissance.
