Robin Williams had to re-dub much of the dialogue. Goofs As per the info in the trivia section of this film, the make up and appliances for Popeye's massive forearms were not ready. So in some scenes, especially the boxing match, if you look at the inside of his forearms, you can see that they are merely flesh colored pads tied over Robin Williams ' arms the strings are visible. When I learned that Robin Williams had passed, like a lot of people who loved his work, I took the evening off to revisit his film canon and be reminded of his brilliance. I watched Popeye , the Robert Altman musical. I loved it when I first saw it in the theater as a kid, and I still love it today. But fuck that. Nothing else even comes close. Critics and even my own friends like to criticize Popeye for its confusing or nonexistent plot. A baby gets kidnapped, there are several frantic meals, lots of songs about nothing, characters rush in and out in pursuit of their own half-baked story lines, and at some point Olive Oyl wrestles an octopus. But honestly, how many times has a plot ruined an otherwise perfectly good comedy? A plot would just distract from the artful chaos and the narrative incongruities and the beautifully meaningless mayhem.

Over 20 wooden structures were built with the tree trunk logs imported from Holland and wooden shingles brought in from Canada, in order to construct the set. Eight tons of nails and gallons of paint were used in constructing the set and a foot breakwater was even built to protect the filming area from the high seas. Smith , a huge, mean man who takes his frustrations out on the town of Sweet Haven. During all of this commotion, Popeye is searching for his long-lost Poppa, who abandoned him as a child.

Of course, back then I had no idea what a bizarre gathering of talent made this oddball movie a reality.
