I'm not sure why, but recently YouTube has been recommending me a lot of videos that showcase the animation of the old HxH anime and the new one.
A lot of them are just the two series footage side by side, but today I saw a video that actually breaks down the animation styles of both versions and which animators did which parts, which was really fascinating. I know everyone raves about HxH on here, but when I watched I kind of thought it was just ok.
I think there were a lot of really cool ideas in it and some really creative narrative decisions, especially for a shonen series, but I was having a hard time connecting with the show for some reason that I couldn't put into words. I took a break somewhere in the middle of the Chimera Ant Arc because I was just not enjoying it.
But then I started to watch these videos comparing the new version with the original 90's version which I knew existed but had never seen and I finally figured out why I was struggling with the new version so much.
The old version is so much more aesthetically in line with the content and tone of the story it's not even funny. I mean look at this: The new version just looks so generic, the bright color palate and the way everything is framed feels so stock shonen anime. But then I look at the old version and it's got all of this moody lighting and camera angles.
It makes the scenes feel a lot more intense than the new version, which I think is why I bounced off the new version. The aesthetics of the new version always seemed to clash with the tone of the story being told, especially once I got to Chimera Ant and suddenly characters are being eaten alive, shot to death, and tortured but it still has this goofy bright color palate and art. From what I've seen in the discourse about the two versions, people seem to roll their eyes at people preferring the '99 version as anime oldheads hating new anime, but I am not that person.
I watched the new one first, and I think the old one at least looks way better. Seeing these videos actually made me care about HxH again and want to go finish it, but this time I might just watch the '99 version to refresh myself before restarting the Chimera Ant Arc.
If anyone has watched the old version, is it worth seeing or is it too dated to enjoy anymore? I have heard it had some pacing issues and filler, but that doesn't bother me when I've watched all of Naruto and other long running shonen. Silfer One Winged Slayer Member. I didn't watch further than the TV version of 99 as the OVA animation seemed like a step down overall.
It's worth checking out if you're a fan of the manga or 11, but I don't think it's universally better by any means. If you didn't really care for the 11 anime, I don't think it's gonna change your mind much, to be honest.
SigmasonicX Member. Oct 25, 11, For the York New arc, the old anime beats the new one out of the water. However, as much as the '99 anime added its own flourishes to the Hunter Exam, they made an arc that's already a bit of a slog even more so.
And of course there's the fact that the '99 anime ends partway through the York New arc, finishes it in OVAs that looked worse, and then had the often terrible-looking Greed Island OVAs god that opening for the Greed Island Final OVA series which incidentally skipped some material the '11 anime kept.

But I guess the '99 anime seems worth watching for the animation, probably better adapted and fleshed out than the animation that just wanted to get to the unadapted part like FMA vs Brotherhood.
