Beastars tells the story of a wolf who wants to have sex with a rabbit, but worries he will devour said rabbit. Though it could be a cringey, misguided exploration of race. I know this is gauche amongst critics, but for me, Beastars works when I quit trying to make a one-to-one connection between our world and its city of horny teenage carnivores and herbivores.

I enjoy the show best when I take its internal logic on its own terms. In that way, Beastars is like Romeo and Juliet. A sexy, violent, and often frustrating tale of star-crossed lovers kept apart by society. And like the works of Shakespeare, Beastars can be contorted into whatever else you want it to be.

Beastars season 1 and 2 are available to stream on Netflix. Blue Period is available to stream on Netflix. The highly anticipated second season of the acclaimed Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba series took an unconventional approach this year. Instead of airing a full season of new footage, Ufotable split the season into two parts: the Mugen Train arc, which re-edits the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train movie into a seven-episode storyline with additional content, and the Entertainment District arc, a brand-new arc that takes places immediately following the events of Mugen Train.

While it may be a tad soon to endorse the Entertainment District arc, season two of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba so far has established itself as a worthy follow-up to the smash-hit. In the last season, all of this starts to culminate, as plucky orphan Tohru Honda tries to break the curse binding the Sohma family to domineering family head Akito. But because this is Fruits Basket , everyone has their own share of trauma, Akito included.

The emotional final season of Fruits Basket reveals that all is not what it seems when it comes to Akito. Have tissues on hand. With beautiful Ukiyo-e-esque backgrounds, an evocative score by composer Kensuke Ushio, and an emotionally riveting script penned by by Reiko Yoshida Violet Evergarden , The Heike Story is one of the most beautiful anime to premiere this year.

We learn he has tattoos and piercings! In Horimiya , we see them fall for each other in a matter of episodes. Overtime, we see the once lonely Miyamura develop a loving and supportive community around him. The characters shy away from intense conflict, and embrace idyllic friendships that overcome conflict without a whole lot of development.

Fun and light, Horimiya was just a rephrasing summer snack of a watch for me. Horimiya is available to stream on Hulu and Funimation. As with any season of JJBA, the stakes only escalate from there as Jolyne manifests strange supernatural abilities of her own as she is stalked by nefarious villains and would-be hitmen intent on killing her and her family.

Jujutsu Kaisen was the breakout anime success of and continued strong in The story follows the young Yuji Itadori, a good-hearted school boy who one day eats an actual finger, which served as a vessel for a powerful demon called Sukuna. After consuming the finger, Itadori gets taken in by the questionable, but powerful mentor Gojo Satoru , who assembles a Naruto -like cast of three central characters who work together to defeat the monsters known as curses in their world.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a show that plays with the tropes of shonen anime. The show starts off a bit slow, but pays off to those who spend just a little more time with it. The characters — and its women especially — are presented with care, and the three main characters develop an endearing dynamic reminiscent of siblings who like to pick on each other.

It sticks to its roots as a semi-educational show, and this season gives fun looks into some cool areas of Japan. Laid-back Camp season 2 is available to stream on Crunchyroll. The second season of Megalobox is a far darker, somber, and more melancholic underdog story than the devil may care attitude of the first season. Megalobox 2: Nomad is available to stream on Funimation.

Odd Taxi is, well, odd. Teio is a shoe-in for winning the triple crown, but an unexpected injury trips her up, making things hard for her. I learned so much about real life Japanese racehorses watching this, and some of the episodes had me bawling while I cheered on Teio.
