A charming but slight musical fairy tale, The Little Mermaid was such a surprise hit that it allowed the animation department to keep tackling bigger and bigger projects, starting with the masterpiece Beauty And The Beast. But the animators did dust off their multiplane camera for a couple of shots, and brought in actors for live-action reference, both for the first time in years.
The major result of bringing in Ashman and Menken was a boost in confidence. On the commentary track of the new The Little Mermaid Blu-ray a track carried over from the previous DVD edition , Menken says Ashman saw this film both as a continuation of their collaboration on the hit musical Little Shop Of Horrors and a return to the Disney glory days of Snow White and Cinderella.
They were determined that their part of the job would be as good as it could be, which in turn inspired co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker to keep pushing their bosses for more money and more time.
Not everyone in the Disney corporate structure knew or understood what the animation department was sitting on with The Little Mermaid , but those who did sprang to life for the first time in years, fighting to prove that quality would sell. As it turned out, it sold so well that nearly everything that made The Little Mermaid a success was subsequently processed into a formula that Disney and its competitors alike tried to repeat as closely as possible in the years that followed.
The headstrong heroine, the good-hearted love-object, and the powerful magician who stands in the way of their eternal happiness all became staples of big-screen cartoons in the s, as animators reinterpreted the old-fashioned Disney fairy tale with modern gumption. It may be the film which kicked off the Mousedom's animation renaissance, but in the face of the higher profile, classic status of Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King, The Little Mermaid tends to get overshadowed. Which is a pity, because it's a charmer of a movie, boasting all the ingredients that make a Disney experience something to treasure yet free of all the politically correct, formulaic elements that have bogged down the more recent productions. Set in a cavernous, beautiful underwater world, Mermaid dips into Danish folklore or Hans Christian Andersen, at least , and comes back with the flame-haired Ariel Benson , the lippy, troublesome youngest daughter of sea king Triton not quite how Andersen envisaged it, presumably. Desperate for a ticket to the mainland, Ariel trades her voice to Sea Witch Ursula Pat Carroll for a pair of legs, and heads off to win the heart of the pearly-toothed Prince Eric Barnes , whom she rescued from a vicious storm, lest she run the risk of becoming Ursula's prisoner forever Made before Disney started cranking their cartoons out at an annual rate, Little Mermaid draws heavily on the old-fashioned qualities that punctuated their classic back catalogue; comedy animals, in this case a brigade of personable sea life led by the inspired crab creation Sebastian , catchy, even memorable tunes Under The Sea, Kiss The Girl , and a truly quake-inducing villain in the shape of Ursula. The prince may be a bit of a wet blanket, and the inevitable happy ending just a little too hurried, but in spite of minor flaws this still delivers exactly the right quotient of laughs, sniffles, scares and songs to remain sparkling family fun. It is a production of Walt Disney Pictures and is a live-action adaptation of the animated film of the same name , which itself is loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen 's tale of the same name. It is produced by Rob Marshall, John DeLuca , Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda , the latter whom co-wrote new songs for the remake as the lyricist, Alan Menken is set to return as the composer for both the score and the songs. A young mermaid makes a deal with a sea witch : trading her beautiful voice to get human legs so she can discover the world above water and impress a prince. On December 6, , it was reported that Rob Marshall was being courted by the Walt Disney Company to direct the film, while Jane Goldman will serve as screenwriter. On land, though, things get a little more complicated for Ariel and Prince Eric. What does that have to do with the live-action adaptation? Eventually, she meets Prince Eric and decides to trade her voice to the sea witch, Ursula, for a chance at true love. In the end, it was worth it.
