Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory Review – Return to Familiar Places

That being said, the franchise has a very hardcore fanbase, and has had a number of games in varying quality. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition takes a very different tone from the cartoons you may recall as a child. Admittedly, the story starts off a bit slow on both fronts due to a boatload of text, but thankfully, they do introduce more interesting elements to keep your interest piqued. Combat is kept to a simple rock-paper-scissors style hierarchy, with Vaccine types beating Virus types, and Virus Types being strong against Data ones. That badass Vaccine monster you just raised? Combat clips along at a brisk pace as well, and battling the or so Digimon in the game is a total blast. There are plenty of fan favourites on display, but there are also a lot of really cool monsters you may not recognize, depending on how much time you spent with the series growing up. Battling never gets dull, and I always wanted to mix and match my teams to see what I could come up with. While these are essentially up-scaled Vita games, both versions run excellently, and at no point did I experience major performance issues.

Though it may have been many years for some of you, the brand has remained strong in Japan and is having something of a resurgence thanks to the six part film series Digimon Adventure tri , setting our original anime heroes on a much darker journey along the digital landscape.

For Americans, Digimon is largely remembered as a series of cartoons that aired nationally on Fox Kids from Digimon was darker and more mature than its contemporaries, which won it a lot of die-hard fans, but the games, at least the ones released in America, never really lived up to that promise. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth changed all that. I have always been a die-hard PC gamer, the kind of person who plays PC-centric genres like shooters, RPGs, and strategy games, but in early , I heard there was a new, story-driven Digimon game coming out for the PS4 and Vita, and I knew I had to check it out. And the character designs looked terrible, but hey, it was a new Digimon game. This hack gives you the ability to capture digital monsters, more commonly known as digimon, a unique life form thought by many to be nothing more than computer programs.

Yeah, I've been familiar with this series for years, mostly watching the anime but I've never picked up any of the games until now. Might have something to do with my constant playing in Pokemon Shield and my backlog of games I had wanted to play this year

Digimon Cyber Sleuth: Starting Out

Digimon has never been as popular as it main competitor, Pokemon, but it does have a special place in my heart. I especially remember playing hundreds of hours of Digimon World 2 as a kid, which is perhaps the game that started my love for RPGs. First things first: despite being part of the Digimon Story series, these two Cyber Sleuth games are very much their own thing, at the very least in terms of storyline.

Digimon has always held a real soft spot in my heart. Instead of going into a lot of the story beats, it is sufficient to know that both games have pretty different storylines with fairly good writing and good voice acting. Hopping between the networks of the digital world and the real world to solve cases and work with hackers, the story is always pretty interesting. It is just a little slower paced with a lot of dialogue boxes and exposition. Drawing inspiration from turn-based RPGs, players can see who will come next in turn; there are much more than four moves per character; a small chat system creates stronger bonds and certain options with NPCs outside of battle, and more. There are a lot of Digimon to collect too.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth finally brought the Digimon game franchise back to the West when it released back in , with that trend extending to other games as well. Each game has three save slots you can use, allowing you to play through both games at the same time if you would like.

Though the game is a bit slow to start, the overall payoff is rewarding and worth the wait. The fantastic Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth sort of changed that when it came to the West a couple years back, as it was a shockingly complex yet rather accessible turn-based RPG. As part of Hudie, you solve cases and do jobs for fellow hackers alongside your Digimon companions in the hopes of finding the person who took your account and slandered your name. Random encounters with enemy Digimon and Tamer battles with enemy hackers are common. Both situations help you level up your Digimon rather quickly. Every Digimon has a huge number of Digivolution trees, with many overlapping ones. This means you can experiment with a ton of different Digimon evolutions, especially due to how quickly your Digimon level up.
