Based on true events, this animated feature is a moving story of enduring cross-cultural friendship among childrenin the aftermath of World War II. Brothers Junpei 10 and Kanta 7 live happily with their father on a tiny island off the northern coastline of Japan, mostly unaware of the ongoing global conflict. At the end of the war, however, all their lives are thrown into chaos when the Russian army arrive and take over the island — and Tanya, daughter of the army commander, moves in next door. What follows is an emotional story of love and loss as the children are caught in historical events much bigger than they are, and over which they have absolutely no control. Beautiful hand-drawn animation, an emotive score and an element of the fantastical all contribute to the telling of a powerful story. Wonderful and sad at the same time, the film presents the horrors of war through the eyes ofchildren, as they see the devastating impact on their own family and friends.

In the aftermath of the most devastating conflict mankind had ever experienced, the tiny island of Shikotan became part of the Sakhalin Oblast Inspired by true events. They can add so many more layers to a story and make it much more meaningful. Sometimes I even like that part of a film more than its actual story, for example in The Notebook. This movie right here makes great use of that method, but that's not even the best thing. Giovanni's Island has a lot of similarities to Grave of the Fireflies, and I really mean a lot.
If I listed them all you would wonder how this film can not feel like a remake or a cheap copy. And that's exactly why I'm not gonna do this, because it doesn't feel like that at all. In my cynicism, I assumed this was for the obvious reasons: They're both sad anime films about a boy who has to take care of his younger sibling surviving in post World War Two Japan. Turns out, these two films are similar beyond that, in that they both share the same essential purpose: They're films about celebrating beauty found in the direst circumstances. Yes, they're both tearjerkers, but the point of making the audience sad is to have the fleeting moments of joy burn all the brighter.
I don't know how I should describe what I just saw. And even shares the same tone, although this movie is more lighthearted compared to the other. But There's a lot to love about this movie. Like the animation. The animation is beautifully made, and it delivers on bringing some creative and beautiful scenes, such as The Galaxy Train sequence. The score and the songs were emotional and beautiful as well.
The characters and the voice acting is amazing and can deliver some emotional moments. Like when Junpei said, "Kanta, We're home" in the end, I got emotional. Overall, this is an underrated and emotional film from Production I. G, and a good alternative for those who don't want to watch Grave of The Fireflies.
If GoTF is too much for you to handle, then this is for you. So beautiful, it's heartbreaking but not totally devastatingly painful. The ending was very touching. The relationship between the brothers was so wonderful. Did I cry? It's quite possible. At the same time, I find this something difficult to complain about. This is based on an under-discussed set of real-life events if not an exact-to-life true story from the end of World War 2, and the physical release I own contains a large book detailing some of the historical details about the places and events this film was based upon.
I was prepared to come here and say that, despite some qualms, I was sad to see a movie this solid whiff its emotional climax. Which is not to say the rest of the movie fails, though. The story and emotional beats can be handled The rest of the film has moments both good and less good but everything manages to average out.
Not quite Grave of the fireflies- but I did cry quite a bit. Between this and Interstellar I was crying more consistently at movies yesterday than ever before. Giovanni's Island offers something unique from its contemporaries in the "children suffer during WWII" subgenre of anime films.
It's not quite as torturous a watch as something like Grave of the Fireflies and it tells a more unique story than something like the derivative Barefoot Gen. It's a nice complementary story, offering a look at a conflict after the war that isn't talked about at as often. Still from a child's perspective, and still with its share of bleak moments - I mean this is the direct aftermath of war we're talking about, focusing on the losing side and the consequences of that.

Nishikubo's retelling of these real life events isn't particularly challenging but the story of Giovanni and his brother Campanella, both named after characters in Kenji Miyazawa's storybook, 'Night on the Galactic Railroad', and the post-surrender shake up of their idyllic life on the island of Shikotan is moving nonetheless. The production finds a nice balance between the fantastical and the sentimental by leaning heavily on the children's perspective.

A true never before told WWII story, this dramatic and heart-warming animated film about cross-cultural friendship among children in the aftermath of the war is due to receive its UK premiere at the London Film Festival this October. At that time, we did not really understand. Then one day, everything changed. Many soldiers, wearing uniforms we had never seen before, arrived on the island. That was the day I met Tanya.

There are still plenty of people in Japan, including the current Prime Minister, who try to revise certain controversial parts of history, while more liberal people, including anime director Hayao Miyazaki, believe Japan should do more to apologise for its mistakes. Both films deal with the role of children at the end of the war and the resulting aftermath. Both films are also based on real events. But there are many differences: the quality of the animation, and the soundtrack among them. In the part of Japan the movie is set in, the northern island of Shikotan, the issue of the war is still alive. Another group of nearby islands, the Kuril Islands, is still controlled by Russia to this day. The control of these islands has been so problematic that Russia and Japan have never strictly declared an end to hostilities. You could argue that World War II is still going because of it.

Many men have gone off to fight the war and we see the sportive two brothers — Junpei 10 year old and Kanta — going on about their daily routine, which is hunting for bird eggs and attending schoolhouse, governed by Miss Sawako. Grandfather Genzou is a proud fisherman. Tatsuo often asks Kanta to read the book and the boys are also drawn towards the story of two kittens going on metaphysical journey, aboard a magical railroad train.

Like the film "Grave of the Fireflies," from which it borrows a little too obviously, the new "Giovanni's Island" depicts the cruel, unnecessary suffering of children caught in political conflicts they don't understand. Ten-year-old Junpei and his little brother, Kanta, are growing up on Shikotan, a tiny island near the northern edge of Japan, when World War II abruptly ends. But Japan's surrender doesn't put an end to their hardships. The island is occupied by Soviet troops, who take over the inhabitants' homes and school, forcing Junpei's family to share the stable with their horse. Their lives take a turn for the worse when their father is caught illegally distributing rice to his neighbors and is imprisoned.
Well, I complain about there not being many anime films to review these days and two come along at once. Junpei Kota Yokoyama and Kanta Junya Taniai are two young brothers who live on the small island of Shikotan, off the northernmost coast of Japan. As Japan surrender on August 15, , the island becomes Soviet Union territory and the Japanese residents are forced to share the island with the Soviets who come to claim the land. The two boys are cautious of the invaders at first, until they meet Tanya Polina Ilyushenko , a beautiful young Russian girl whose family forces them out of their homes.
