Right from the start I want to mention that this review of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion is going to be full of spoilers. For example, I wrote a five-part series on the main characters of Madoka Magica starting with Madoka Kaname. But, finally getting to the movie at hand, this is the sequel to the series as well as the third movie. The first two movies are just recap of the series with slightly better visuals and a bit of information cut out. At the end of the series, Madoka resets the world, but without herself or the witches magical girls fight against. This in turn leads to the rise of the wraiths, which are briefly mentioned in this movie.

Madoka Magica The Movie – Rebellion – and Redefining Love

This section may contain major spoilers! The movie premiered in Japan on October 26th, It is minutes long. However, Homura realizes something is amiss and after some investigation recovers her lost memories and realizes that she, Madoka, the other girls and several of their friends are trapped in an alternate world inside a witch's barrier. As Homura realizes that the witch is none other than herself, Kyubey appears and reveals that she had fallen into despair and when she was about to become a witch, he isolated her Soul Gem to set a trap for Madoka, hoping to take control of the confounding Law of Cycles.

However, when Madoka appeared to retrieve Homura, she had forgotten about her duty as the Law of Cycles and her powers, thus Kyubey kept observing her until that point. Having recovered her memories, Homura forces herself to complete the witch transformation at the cost of having her soul destroyed, to protect Madoka from the Incubators. At that moment Sayaka and a new girl named Nagisa Momoe, whose witch form is actually Charlotte—the witch that killed Mami—lead Madoka and the others in breaking the barrier to reach Homura's real body.

Madoka recovers her memories and power as the Law of Cycles and reaches for Homura, but the latter releases the curse in her Soul Gem which she reveals is not one of despair, but love. With this power, retaining her human form, Homura suppresses Madoka's powers while transcending into what she considers to be a demon.

Afterwards, Homura captures Kyubey and rewrites reality so he and his kind bear the curses of the world while Madoka can return to a normal life. But Homura realizes that Madoka will eventually remember the truth and regain her divinity, accepting that they might become enemies should that time come.

A post-credits scene shows Homura seated in a chair while watching over Mitakihara City and a badly-beaten Kyubey in the vicinity. After staring into the horizon, Homura leans over and falls off a cliff.

English translation: The magical girl who wished to release all magical girls from the tragic chain of wishing for hope as magical girls and eventually falling into despair as witches. Due to the grandiose nature of that wish, Madoka herself became a concept of the new world. English translation: The girl who repeated time on several occasions to prevent Madoka from becoming a magical girl.

In the world with its laws rewritten, she is the only being left who remembers that Madoka was there. And succeeding that will, she fights as a magical girl. English translation: Madoka's close friend who became a magical girl when she wished for her childhood friend's wounds to be healed.

When she gathered an amount of curses equal to the amount of blessings she wished for, she became a witch and lost her life alongside Kyoko. Through Madoka's wish, she was greeted by a calm, peaceful final moment without becoming a witch.

English translation: A magical girl in Mitakihara who is senior to Sayaka and Madoka. She lost her life in the fight with the witch of sweets, but by Madoka's wish, that tragedy was erased, and she continues her life as a magical girl. English translation: A magical girl from a neighboring town. She opposed Sayaka for using magic for the sake of others, but came to realize that the two of them were similar.

And then she risked her own life to save Sayaka who had become a witch. She continues her life as a magical girl in the world granted by Madoka's wish.

English translation: A new magical girl has appeared. She has a childlike appearence and what she wished for to become a magical girl or why she has appeared is not known. English translation: A mysterious animal from outer space. Their goal was to use the energy converted from the change of hope to despair in pubescent girls, but in the world granted after Madoka's wish, they seek to secure energy through another method.

Merry Christmas! As we approach the 7th Anniversary of the Madoka franchise, its worth considering the ending once more. It was controversial, of course. Many people thought it was a cop-out, that it trivialized sacrifices made earlier in the series. Others thought it was a clear articulation of the core themes of Magical Girl shows, that hope always shines through, no matter the darkness. One person though, definitely did not like this ending.

In a world where witches no longer exist, Homura transfers into a familiar classroom with unfamiliar circumstances — Sayaka, Kyoko, and Madoka are all students, and Mami is accompanied by a creature reminiscent of the witch Charlotte, who had formerly brought about her untimely demise. Realizing that something is wrong, Homura begins to search for answers — answers that paint a picture far worse than she could have imagined. Whereas the original series centers on Madoka and her point of view, the main character of Rebellion is Homura, following her story in the world recreated by Madoka. Rather than simply following her as she moves through the motions, the story is presented in such a way that her thoughts are reflected in the world around her. The ending is the most controversial aspect of the film, and understandably so. Despite the symbolism and underlying themes, the story of Madoka Magica was always simple to understand. Even Rebellion, up until the the final fifteen minutes or so, is easy to follow once the pieces fall into place. Having said that, the why makes sense and was heavily foreshadowed, the how makes sense depending on how you look at the situation, and the ending works perfectly as a conclusion to the franchise. While many considered Madoka to be the weak link of the original series, her role in Rebellion is much different. Rather than her subdued personality and observational perspective, she retains her original cheerfulness and outgoing attitude from the timeline before Homura made her wish.

My explanation may differ a bit from others, but the gist of it is the same. Besides, much is up to viewer interpretation, so my explanation is no more or less correct than others you might find. My laptop died…luckily I got a brand new one for Christmas! Now the wait is over. At the end of the anime series, Madoka Kaname is no longer a human. She had become the goddess of the new world, where Magical Girls no longer had to become witches. Everything is perfect… XD Just kidding! Nothing is perfect in anime!

Madoka Magica: Five Things Homura Did Wrong

As far as anime fans are concerned, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion is one of the best anime movies ever made. The fight scenes are beautifully animated, and the plot is solid. Even though it is a sequel to the original anime , which ended wonderfully, it doesn't undo what the original worked so hard to achieve and instead adds another layer of closure. Rebellion does a great job of further expanding the universe of Madoka while giving fans a look into the consequences of Madoka's decision to become a god. The movie also shows just how Homura has descended into madness and that she isn't willing to ever really give up Madoka -for better or worse.

Iroha Tamaki is a magical girl who made a wish for her sister to be cured of an unknown illness, but lost her memories of her wish in the process. Together with Kuroe, she fights Witches in her area and lives an ordinary life otherwise. This Witch proves resilient against their attack, and Iroha briefly encounters a younger Kyubey mid-battle. She warns the two that there is nothing for them in Kamihara, and the next morning, Iroha suddenly recalls her original wish.

Is there a movie of Madoka Magica The movie?

I've been an anime fan since the 90s and have blogged about anime since I've seen it all, done it all, and gotten the t-shirt. When it comes to anime series in which philosophy is explored or referenced, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is probably one of the most interesting and entertaining. Like Hamlet, it's a story where the protagonist struggles with a crucial decision throughout there's even a nod to this in the first witch in episode 1 being called Gertrud, a reference to the Hamlet character Gertrude perhaps? In both cases, many unforeseen tragic consequences result from their indecision. Madoka's decision is about whether to make a contract with Kyubey, a white alien ferret-like creature who can talk to the girls telepathically, and become a magical girl to fight evil in exchange for a single wish. Throughout the show, instead of making her decision directly, she learns from others who make the contract.
