Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon Specials

At its best, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is a hilarious and heartwarming story of wacky misfits finding family among each other. At its worst, it's a showcase of creepy age-inappropriate behavior and fan service pandering to a very specific niche of otaku. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S Episode 6 doesn't fix the show's problematic aspects, but it does help to explain how both the good and bad parts of the series stem from the same source.

As the couple negotiates whether they need a magical "binding" for their relationship, Fafnir reveals some important details about how dragon culture and physiology differ from humans'.

According to Fafnir, dragons have no concept of being an "adult" or "child. Dragons also don't have a concept of family within their culture, with parents abandoning the young. Everything the dragons have been doing while living in the human world has been an attempt to copy humanity and fit in.

Fafnir pretends to find this desire silly and be above it, but it's clear he genuinely enjoys life with Takiya and his video games. This single conversation nails both what's sweet about Dragon Maid and what's uncomfortable about it. However, it makes sense that Lucoa's unintentionally inappropriate behavior toward her child summoner is an attempt to find familial belonging as an ageless being without any experience of "family" or any human norms.

Tohru and Kobayashi's "found family" is a sweeter, less creepy presentation of the same concept. Writing an in-universe explanation for problematic material doesn't negate the problems with it, as anyone who's rolled their eyes at some creepy fan service show excusing the sexualization of a prepubescent girl by saying "she's actually 10, years old.

As Tooru continues on her quest to become the greatest maid and Kanna Kamui fully immerses in her life as an elementary school student, there is not a dull day in the Kobayashi household with mischief being a daily staple. On one such day, however, a massive landslide is spotted on the hill where Kobayashi and Tooru first met—a clear display of a dragon's might. When none of the dragons they know claim responsibility, the perpetrator herself descends from the skies: Ilulu, the radical Chaos Dragon with monstrous power rivaling that of Tooru. Sickened by Tooru's involvement with humans, Ilulu resorts to the typical dragon method of resolving conflict—a battle to the death. Despite such behavior, she becomes intrigued by Kobayashi's ability to befriend dragons and decides instead to observe just what makes Kobayashi so special.

With a combination of warm familial themes, a level of mature awareness about the nature of its relationships, and its free spirit, the series is definitely something I love.

As Kobayashi sets off for another day at work, she opens her apartment door only to be met by an unusually frightening sight—the head of a dragon, staring at her from across the balcony. The dragon immediately transforms into a cute, busty, and energetic young girl dressed in a maid outfit, introducing herself as Tooru. It turns out that the stoic programmer had come across the dragon the previous night on a drunken excursion to the mountains, and since the mythical beast had nowhere else to go, she had offered the creature a place to stay in her home. Thus, Tooru had arrived to cash in on the offer, ready to repay her savior's kindness by working as her personal maidservant. Though deeply regretful of her words and hesitant to follow through on her promise, a mix of guilt and Tooru's incredible dragon abilities convinces Kobayashi to take the girl in.

After helping to save an ancient dragon, Kobayashi is surprised to see that it wants to continue living with her. Transforming into an adorable young woman in a maid outfit, Tooru is determined to serve Kobayashi however she can as a thank you for all her help. Of course, nothing about this seems remotely normal to Kobayashi and she really just wants to get to work. The series follows their seemingly normal everyday life as they deal with very abnormal circumstances. There are plenty of humorous series out there that have to deal with the unordinary living in a regular world, like Dragon Crisis!

A strange turn of events leads the Dragon, Tohru, to work as Miss Kobayashi's maid. She occasionally causes trouble for her beloved Miss Kobayashi while blending into human society and splendidly carrying out her maid duties. Her fellow dragons, Kanna, Lucoa, Fafnir, and Elma all find their own places to fit in as well and enjoy interspecies interactions with the humans. Yet while they're all enjoying that laid-back and occasionally turbulent left, the threat of a new Dragon swoops down upon Miss Kobayashi.
