Try to describe what the Joker looks like. Bleached skin? Permanent grin? Clownish appearance? These are features most commonly associated with the Clown Prince of Crime, but they are far from a requirement. The Joker is a universal symbol of chaos, yes, but over the years in various adaptations, the Joker has changed physically.

This has nothing to do with the fact that Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger look nothing alike. The Joker has gone from an overly tattooed thug in Suicide Squad to a hulking behemoth in The Batman to a ghoul wearing his own skin as a mask in Death of the Family.

The Joker's various looks have a direct function in terms of storytelling. Each iteration of the Joker's appearance informs readers and viewers about the kind of Joker they're about to experience.

One key element of the Joker's appearance is whether the Joker's skin is bleached or painted white. This key detail provides information to you, the audience member, about the Joker's state of mind and approach to madness. A bleached-white Joker is one defined by circumstance. He is driven to madness by some external factor. He did not choose to be the Joker. This Joker is created, most often, because of Batman. On the other hand, a Joker who paints his face white chose to become a symbol of chaos.

While external factors might have forced his hand, this Joker is, ultimately, the master of his own fate. A painted face also indicates that this iteration of Joker will be more grounded in reality. After all, in real life, people's skin can't be bleached white after a chemical bath, but anyone can paint their face white. It indicates that the Joker isn't a fantastic comic book creature with a dramatic origin.

He's just some guy. If the story world the character occupies is more fantastical, he usually has bleached skin. More mundane story worlds feature make-up.

But beware any man who just paints over his mustache, like Cesar Romero's Joker. Men like that are a force to be feared, for they laugh in the face of society's conventions. Not all Jokers have marks. Some have clear skin without any scars or tattoos at all.

However, this often indicates much about the Joker's state of mind and experiences, offering subtle clues about the Joker's viewpoint.

Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad has several tattoos and marks on his body. He even wore a grill. Many fans theorize that the grill is there because Batman knocked out Joker's teeth. On the other hand, the tattoos are entirely driven by this Joker's desire to be edgy and indicate he's either part of a gang, wants to emphasize that he's a "damaged" person or that Jared Leto just thought they looked cool.

On the other hand, the New 52 introduces the Joker with his face being cut off. This results in a haunting, gruesome Joker who wears his face like a mask. This adds an extra element of horror to the character. Death of the Family presents the Joker at perhaps his most honest and unhinged. Even his laughing face is nothing more than a mask.

Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight sports scars around his mouth, akin to the Joker's literary inspiration: the clown from The Man Who Laughs , whose face is cut into a permanent grin the film version, which directly inspired the Joker's design, just featured actor Conrad Veidt smiling to a painful degree. It is clear that, much like in The Man Who Laughs , Ledger is forced to smile thanks to some injury, but is it self-inflicted or, like Veidt's character, forced upon him?

Does it even matter? These are open questions left by the character. Many Jokers have varying physical builds as well. This can indicate any number of things about them, especially if their builds are deliberately exaggerated. This shows these Jokers have been in the game for a while. They're experienced in one respect or another.

On the other hand, gaunt and starved Jokers are often detached from human needs. They are so obsessed with their target obsession they don't eat.

Either that, or they're desperate. Such is the case with the Joker's original incarnation: a gaunt, haunting figure brought to life by Bill Finger. This is also true of the title character in The Joker , played by Joaquin Phoenix, a character who, in his mentally ill state, seems to forget to eat. He can afford some food, but in his depression, neglects his physical needs. On the other hand, more physically fit Jokers are a bodily threat, training to fight Batman man-to-man.

Leto had some distinct abs. The Batman 's Joker is a hulking fiend. Both are physical, as well as emotional, threats to the Caped Crusader. The Sexiest? There is also something to be said about whether the Joker is meant to be attractive to the audience.

Jack Nicholson and Joaquin Phoenix are not typically viewed in such a light. Very recently, in the DC Black series Harleen , the Joker has been presented as exceptionally attractive. This is in order to disarm the audience, to make them almost side with him -- and to get Harleen to side with him. This is similar to the reaction some had to real-life serial killer Ted Bundy. Because Bundy was a handsome man, many women refused to believe he was guilty.

On the other hand, if the Joker is grotesque, he is less alluring. Consider the skinned face of the Joker in Death of the Family or the increasingly grotesque Joker in Gotham.

These are not seductive figures. They are designed to show the horrific side of chaos and evil. Because Joker has been romanticized by fans, these characters are designed to really drive home the fact that the Joker is vile. A huge aesthetic choice that makes a load of difference is also one of the simplest: does the Joker choose to smile? In Joker's first appearance, he is shown brooding in a dark corridor, electing not to smile. This indicates to the audience that the Joker only chooses to smile when he deems it necessary.

He is able to laugh if he so desires. Caser Romero, Jared Leto, and Mark Hamil's Jokers all have the option to smile if they choose to, and on occasion, express other emotions. On the other hand, some Jokers are forced to smile. Ledger's smile is carved in. Nicholson's face is paralyzed in a grin. While Phoenix can choose to smile or scowl, he paints a smile on his face and also suffers from a condition that forces him to laugh.

These Jokers are always smiling no matter what the scenario and, as a result, are extremely disconcerting because of the disconnect between their expression and the situation. These Jokers convey one question: does the Joker choose to laugh at the horror before him or does he simply have no other choice but to smile?

What does that tell us about the character current state? Bleached Skin vs. Read Next in movies.

Two Good Previews Of Batman: One Bad Day: Two Face & Riddler

This week we got our first glimpse of Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and he looks…pretty normal actually. The Joker has historically been through many, many different looks already. Drawn with a purple jacket, green hair, white face paint and a permanent creepy grin, the Joker went on to change subtly over the decades — being a gangster in Suicide Squad , to the realistic portrayal of a mentally sick man in The Joker , with a lot of weirder incarnations in-between. The first onscreen version of the Joker is probably one of the oddest. Cesar Romero refused to shave his moustache for the role, so he looks a bit like a respectable ballroom dancer dressed up as a clown — which, to be fair, is exactly what he was.

The Joker has had a long history of messed up moments in DC Comics, but his actions in the Death of the Family storyline are not for squeamish readers. Throughout his tenure as the number one foe of the Dark Knight , the Joker has paralyzed Barbara Gordon, taken out Jason Todd, and made Batman relive his parents' demise, but that all pales in comparison to the vile antics he gets up to in this book.
