Typically with animated cartoon shows, it's assumed that the only target demographic is children. This is true with shows like Scooby-Doo and Rugrats but there is also the other extreme. Animated shows kids should be nowhere near such as Amazon's Invincible and Netflix's Castlevania. However, there is another option in-between where shows are seemingly for children. They are serviceable and great for kids but the adults can sit down with their kids and enjoy the material with them.

For many, the greatest animated shows ever made are the ones that appeal to kids and adults. Yes, on its surface the show is more geared toward kids, especially in the later seasons. The first four to five seasons on the other hand feature a lot of witty humor.

There are even some adult jokes from characters that will go over the heads of kids including a "dropping the soap" joke that got an episode banned in the United Kingdom and Australia. Many of SpongeBob's misadventures are simply funny no matter the age. This is why there are countless amounts of memes based on SpongeBob, particularly from earlier seasons.

For the adults that would prefer more storytelling, action, and character development: this is perfect for them. The story of a Chosen One trying to traverse the world and master control over four elements has become iconic. Avatar: The Last Airbender has become famous for its epic storytelling and battles. However, it still balances things out for kids by having cute characters, slapstick comedy, and witty humor to make the family fall in love with the characters on their journey.

It was so popular that it received an equally enjoyable follow-up series The Legend Of Korra. This is one that surprised everybody since it has a similar structure to Harry Potter. The first season is merely an adventure fantasy series about a boy and his dog in a colorful land going on different quests. Simple, fun, but well animated and witty. As the series went on, the kids would grow up with the character of Finn. Characters would change, relationships would develop, darker elements would be introduced, and it would result in a very different show by the finale.

It even introduces one of the only lesbian couples in a children's show which is admirable. Every entry in the DC Animated Universe can be enjoyed by the whole family. Justice League and Justice League Unlimited remain some of the best due to their respectful take on these characters. They defend the world from the worst evils and these are not just regular adventures for the League, the villains provide genuine threats. For every fun adventure, there is always another that pushes the envelope such as the episode where Batman simply sits down to provide a dying child some company.

Or one of the Justice League turning out to be an agent for the villains since the beginning. Any DC fan should introduce their kids to this world with these shows.

What seemed like a lifeless reboot of Teen Titans became one of the most beloved DC shows ever made that treated all of its characters seriously. Rather than an anthology of adventures, Young Justice tells a serialized story with every character getting the most development out of any superhero animated show. The animation was great, it reinvented the DC universe in clever ways, and showed shocking amounts of maturity.

Even the third season features blood and cursing, making it technically more for adults but kids will still enjoy it if they've been following from the beginning. Another series that surprised everyone. The bubbly animation made everyone assume it would be another lackluster Cartoon Network show. That was not the case as Steven Universe tackles many subjects such as love, sexuality, identity, and so much more. It's a great science-fantasy series with unique worlds, characters, and powers that would enchant anybody.

There is even an intersexual and non-binary character. If someone was curious, what is the perfect animated sitcom for kids and adults to enjoy? The Amazing World Of Gumball is that sitcom. Not only is the show very beautiful with its hundreds of animation styles but nearly every single episode will have the viewer on the floor laughing.

The Amazing World Of Gumball features a lot of wits as it parodies the world, movies, TV shows, tackles real-world subjects in clever ways. One episode will feature the Dad character expressing himself through crossdressing then another will have a Jumanji -esque adventure inside a GameBoy knockoff. There is something for everybody to enjoy across its six seasons.

The perfect introduction to the horror genre for kids. While there are some episodes that may shock kids, that's part of why it's so loved.

Courage The Cowardly Dog is about a small dog trying to keep his owners from being killed or mutated or whatever victimization by some horror villain every episode. There are some terrifying monsters and concepts in this show. There is Cronenburg-style body horror, monsters, ghosts, demons, and so many other horror tropes. On top of it all, there are a lot of great jokes and some of Courage's reactions to the horror bring healthy amounts of comedy to balance the episodes.

It's two kids who are best friends with the actual Grim Reaper. As a result, they go on so many supernatural adventures straight out of horror movies. There's a lot of disturbing imagery but this show adds more comedy from characters like Billy and Grim than Courage does.

There are as many jokes for kids as there are for adults and the cartoonish art style keeps the technically horrific creatures and villains from becoming too scary. What can be said about Batman: The Animated Series that hasn't already been said?

It's practically a perfect superhero cartoon. It turned Kevin Conroy's Batman into an icon and it showed that superhero shows can be dark and epic thrillers. It developed its villains as much as it did the heroes while experimenting with new characters and stories.

Batman: The Animated Series took on a crime drama, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and any genre possible. It wasn't afraid to be too intense for kids because the creators knew that kids are not as fragile as some parents might think. Now decades later, those kids are now parents and introducing their kids to the show, and for good reason. From movies to shows to games to comic books, there is not much that she does not enjoy or appreciate. Melody is also an aspiring film writer and director as well as a voice actor as a hobby.

This spark for content creation came from her childhood, growing up with media of all kinds which inspired her to write short stories, write comics, and begin writing about them on the internet. Melody's biggest inspiration came from first seeing Zack Snyder's Watchmen in ; the film combined with her knowledge of how scenes were done via behind-the-scenes featurettes prior to the film's release made her fall in love with filmmaking.
