The launch of her first major show in the southern hemisphere sees the UK artist trying to disrupt the cosy and suburban. Cornelia Parker is softly spoken and bird-like; an artist who peppers her conversation with nervous little laughs. Yet her work is all about blowing things up. From Bugs Bunny to Marvin the Martian, from Daffy Duck to the giant monster covered in red hair, even the most minor of characters have become iconic.

This modern lack of awareness is too bad. But HBO Max, the new streaming service, has come to the rescue. The service features a huge collection of the original Looney Tunes cartoons though not all of them , as well as a brand new series of Looney Tunes animated shorts drawn in a modern style, closer to what you might find on Cartoon Network.

And the new versions are pretty good! The two of us recently hopped on Zoom to chat all things looney, tuney, and marooney. Emily: I grew up with Looney Tunes. Revisiting these cartoons as an adult reveals just how much their sense of humor leached out into the world at large. Gags pile on top of gags pile on top of gags, and the incredibly simple stories nonetheless possess real depth.

Eliza: Yes. Remember how the big dog thought she got cooked, because she was in the batter? His mother, she was a human, but she thought [the kitty] was a toy.

Emily: Your mom said this is your first experience with these sorts of animated shorts. How do you feel about cartoons? Eliza: I liked them. A brief lesson in what an aspect ratio is: The first number is the width of an image and the second the height, so a 1.

Emily: This is, as you might expect, huge news. But you heard it here first, folks: Bugs Bunny is a girl, and my esteemed colleague Eliza figured it out. I will endeavor to only use female pronouns for her throughout the rest of this piece, in keeping with this groundbreaking news.

Emily: One thing the new series lacks is the fluid quality of hand-drawn animation. The original cartoons boast an endless series of entertaining visuals and gorgeously drawn characters whose micro-expressions and tiny movements are beautifully rendered by some of the best animation directors in history, including Chuck Jones , Fritz Freleng , and a host of others.

And then, the coup de grace: The camera pulls back to reveal Bugs Bunny herself is the gal behind the eraser. And, indeed, she is a stinker. It is one of the most significant short films ever made, and even if it were the only thing Jones had ever directed, it would cement him as a great.

Eliza, you love to draw. Did you know animation is just a bunch of drawings put together like a flipbook? Eliza: stony silence, then: I could probably make a cartoon. I really like drawing. Eliza: Bugs Bunny! Carrots are tasty. And I win games a lot. One day when me and mom were playing Mancala, I won a bunch of times, and she won like two times.

Eliza: I think my dad is like Elmer Fudd, because he has short hair, too. Emily: You keep comparing your mom to characters with long, red hair. Why is that? Emily: An inescapable fact of the cartoon universe is that the Looney Tunes can blow each other up, cut each other to pieces, and blast each other in the face, and never suffer any lasting harm.

Wile E. Coyote can smack right into a wall and get back up. A character can run over the edge of a cliff and hover in midair before gravity asserts itself. Now do you know what it does? Emily: Sure. Do you think we should use dynamite to solve our problems? Cartoons are made up. His wife or something is Dark Vader? Emily: Right, the divide between reality and surreality is so often what drives the—. A giant eraser descends from the sky and erases the conclusion of this article.

Eliza: They had the black on the screen. I liked it. Emily and Eliza on gender Bugs Bunny, known woman. Emily: Who? Lola Bunny? I know that— Eliza: Bugs Bunny is a girl. Emily and Eliza on animation Emily: One thing the new series lacks is the fluid quality of hand-drawn animation.

Emily and Eliza on who her various family members are in the Looney Tunes universe Emily: Hey, Eliza, who do you think I am most like out of the Looney Tunes characters? Emily: Wow, thanks? I think? Who are you most like, Eliza? Emily: Agreed. How about your sister? Eliza: Elmer Fudd! Emily: Wow. And your dad? Yosemite Sam looks nothing like my boss. Jen: No, I want to hear your answer. Eliza: The one guy with the long red hair.

Jen: The big hairy monster? Eliza: No, he did arm-wrestling with Bugs. Emily: Yosemite Sam?! Eliza: Yeah! He has long, red hair. Emily: Right. Emily and Eliza on dynamite Emily: An inescapable fact of the cartoon universe is that the Looney Tunes can blow each other up, cut each other to pieces, and blast each other in the face, and never suffer any lasting harm.

Emily: And in real life? Eliza: We use our words. Emily: Any further thoughts on dynamite? Emily: Does your mom make you do that? Next Up In Culture. Delivered Fridays. Thanks for signing up! Faramir stared at him for a moment in grave astonishment Then suddenly he caught him as he swayed, and lifting him gently, carried him to the bed and laid him there, and covered him warmly At once he fell into a deep sleep. They rode on through sunset, and slow dusk, and gathering night When at last they halted and dismounted, even Aragorn was stiff and weary Gandalf only allowed them a few hours rest Legolas and Gimli slept and Aragorn lay flat, stretched upon his back but Gandalf stood, leaning on his staff, gazing into the darkness, east and west All was silent, and there was no sign or sound of living thing The night was barred with long clouds, fleeting on a chill wind, when they arose again Under the cold moon they went on once more, as swift as by the light of day. Alas for Boromir he said How you have increased my sorrow, you two strange wanderers from a far country, bearing the peril of Men But you are less judges of Men than I of Halflings We are truth speakers, we men of Gondor We boast seldom, and then perform, or die in the attempt Not if I found it on the highway would I take it I said Even if I were such a man as to desire this thing, and even though I knew not clearly what this thing was when I spoke, still I should take those words as a vow, and be held by them. Legolas gazed ahead, shading his eyes from the level shafts of the new risen sun I see a white stream that comes down from the snows, he said Where it issues from the shadow of the vale a green hill rises upon the east A dike and mighty wall and thorny fence encircle it Within there rise the roofs of houses and in the midst, set upon a green terrace, there stands aloft a great hall of Men And it seems to my eyes that it is thatched with gold The light of it shines far over the land Golden, too, are the posts of its doors There men in bright mail stand but all else within the courts are yet asleep. Maybe But tell me now of your own fortunes, said Frodo, turning the matter aside once again For I would learn more of Minas Ithil and Osgiliath, and Minas Tirith the long enduring What hope have you for that city in your long war? When all was done Faramir led them to a recess at the back of the cave, partly screened by curtains and a chair and two stools were brought there A little earthenware lamp burned in a niche You may soon desire to sleep, he said, and especially good Samwise, who would not close his eyes before he ate whether for fear of blunting the edge of a noble hunger, or for fear of me, I do not know But it is not good to sleep too soon after meat, and that following a fast Let us talk a while On your journey from Rivendell there must have been many things to tell And you, too, would perhaps wish to learn something of us and the lands where you now are Tell me of Boromir my brother, and of old Mithrandir, and of the fair people of Lothlurien. Faramir smiled A pert servant, Master Samwise But nay: the praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards Yet there was naught in this to praise I had no lure or desire to do other than I have done Ah well, sir, said Sam, you said my master had an elvish air and that was good and true But I can say this: you have an air too, sir, that reminds me of, of well, Gandalf, of wizards.

Ostensibly on a friendly visit, the Maine had been sent to Cuba to protect the interests of Americans there after a rebellion against Spanish rule broke out in Havana in January. An official U. Naval Court of Inquiry ruled in March that the ship was blown up by a mine, without directly placing the blame on Spain. Much of Congress and a majority of the American public expressed little doubt that Spain was responsible and called for a declaration of war. Within three months, the United States had decisively defeated Spanish forces on land and sea, and in August an armistice halted the fighting.

Police have issued warnings to parents on social media after a popular WhatsApp challenge has resurfaced, sometimes infiltrating children's YouTube videos. A northern California mother says her daughter has fallen victim to the "Momo challenge" — and created a nearly catastrophic situation in their home. Children who participate in the challenge contact a creepy stranger — "Momo" — who communicates primarily through the Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp. Momo encourages a participant to complete various tasks if they want to avoid being "cursed. Ultimately, the game ends with Momo telling the participant to take their own life and record it for social media. Pearl Woods told CBS Sacramento that her year-old daughter with autism was encouraged to do dangerous things by the character.

At first glance, the two-story stucco house located on Red Bark Lane in Henderson, Nevada, looks very much the same as the neighboring homes located in the South Valley Ranch community. Neutral exterior paint covers the sides and attached garage. A rock garden has been spread over the soil. A cement walkway leads from the driveway to the front door. Look closer and the irregularities begin to appear. The house has protruding bay windows and a rounded front entryway, which are both unusual for the prefabricated construction on the block.

But after Carl discovers an 8-year-old stowaway named Russell, this unlikely duo soon finds themselves on a hilarious journey in a lost world filled with danger and surprises. The characters in Up literally took shape on the page. Believing that basic visual cues convey much about personality, the filmmakers boiled the characters down to their physical essence. Carl was shaped as a brick, weighed down and resistant to change. Russell was shaped like an upside-down egg, innocent, unfinished, and optimistic.
