One of these projects might come as a shock to anime fans, and that is a live-action reboot of "Death Note. However, it is slated to be the newest adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's wildly popular manga series. Details on the project are extremely scarce at the moment, but more will surely be revealed in the coming months as long as names aren't written down in anyone's notebook.

Willem Dafoe to Voice Ryuk in Death Note Movie

Some movies cry out for a sequel and some sequels come as a surprise. It's safe to say that the controversy surrounding the movie version of Death Note and the reaction when the Netflix original production was released made a second film seem highly unlikely.

Fans of the original anime were particularly annoyed. Surprisingly, Death Note turned out to be a big hitter for the online streaming platform, with Netflix's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, describing the film as a "sizeable" triumph. Shock, horror! That means director Adam Wingard's Death Note is getting a follow-up. Here's everything you need to know about the follow up to the neo-noir supernatural thriller.

However, he does have a lot on his plate right now prepping kaiju-fest Godzilla vs. Kong , which is out in cinemas in On top of that, he's also been announced as the director of I Saw the Devil , based on Hoon-jung Park's brutal serial killer thriller. What we do know is that Greg Russo has now been hired to pen the script for Death Note 2. His projects so far have included Mortal Kombat and the Untitled Resident Evil Reboot , both of which are yet to move beyond their announcements and go into full production.

There no official release date yet for Death Note 2. If it follows the practises of the first film, it's possible you'll get to experience the sequel on a bigger screen before it launches on Netflix. The FrightFest line-up included the European premiere of Death Note , so we'd expect Netflix to give it high-profile exposure at that event or similar horror festivals such as Sitges.

Controversial at the time of release , Death Note 2 loosely adapted the Japanese manga of the same name. While there's no confirmation of plot yet, it seems the sequel to Death Note will continue where the first film left off. The rules of the Death Note itself got some pretty big changes in the first film, as the person writing in its pages was given the power to control their victims.

Whether new rules would be added in a second film remains to be seen. Her appearance causes massive disruption for Light and could be the focus the second film needs. It seems unlikely that Qualley's Mia Sutton will return, given that she became the antagonist of the first film and was killed at the end of it.

Having said that, Death Note is a supernatural tale about the very nature of death, so anything's possible. We enjoyed Willem Dafoe's version of the Shinigami Ryuk so we'd be keen to see him return. Similarly, Lakeith Stanfield's take on oddball FBI profiler L was another highlight of the first film, so getting him to reprise that role would be the way to go. If the characters of Misa Amane and Shinigami Rem do appear in the film we'll be expecting casting announcements sooner rather than later, so watch this space.

Aside from the announcement of the sequel, there are no further details on when production will begin. Thankfully, we can expect it to hit screens a lot quicker than the first film. Shane Black was working on a version as far back as before Adam Wingard's Death Note was finally released in We'd expect a turnaround of between 18 months to two years for the sequel. Let's hope when there is a trailer for Death Note 2 , it gets a better response than this Want up-to-the-minute entertainment news and features?

First we had Ghost in the Shell getting turned into a movie, with people saying the decision to cast Scarlett Johansson as the lead was whitewashing. The internet has quickly taken to roasting the film, providing general criticism of how the characters are portrayed compared to the original and turning screenshots into memes. Many who are fans of the anime will most likely be annoyed with the film — here are 10 ways the original is better. Ryuk drops it while in his realm and goes to retrieve it from the human world.

Ryuk (Willem Dafoe), a Japanese death god who initially drops the Death Note in front of Light, and Mia (Margaret Qualley), Light's romantic.

Who does ‘Death Note’ need to please? Manga fans, Japanese creators, whitewashing critics, Netflix?

For anyone who has never seen or read the original source materials, this is just a cheesy B-movie; for anyone who has devoted themselves to the 37 animated episodes or read the 12 volumes of the manga, this is a bastardization of some of the most complex characters in pop culture. If Netflix could find an entire room of Asian actors to play dead for one scene set in Tokyo, would it really have been that hard to cast an Asian actor to play Light instead of a Mark McGrath wannabe? Changing the setting from Japan to Seattle adds to this weird idea that Netflix wanted to Americanize a Japanese cultural phenomenon, which may account for why the plot of the film feels like every other teen movie of the last 20 years. Riddled with overdone teen angst, we get yet another unneeded story of a bullied high school nerd who has something empowering happen to him, leading him to get the girl and a new reputation. This cringe-fest was then coupled with a low-budget CGI demon and unrealistic gore. The entire storyline focuses on a high-stakes game of cat and mouse between the pseudo-villain, Light, and his foil, L. The anime Light is an egotistical sociopath who who at first believes he is using the Death Note for the greater good. These seemingly justifiable intentions eventually form the power trip that makes him believe he is a god, just like the Shinigami god of death Ryuk that accompanies him while he possesses the Death Note. However, the Light in the movie, who happens to have the last name Turner and a seemingly fairly odd death-godparent , is a standard unhappy teen who will literally do anything to get the girl—like show off the fact that he murdered the school bully and even momentarily contemplate murdering his father for her approval.

Death Note

Netflix is at the center of anothe r controversy surrounding an Asian story. The streaming giant released the trailer for Death Note on Wednesday. The English-language adaptation of the popular Japanese manga of the same name has since drawn backlash online for what some are calling another example of Hollywood whitewashing an Asian story. It follows a high school student who finds a notebook, "Death Note," which has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. The student, whose name in the original source material is Light Yagami, uses it to wield his own brand of vigilante justice, killing off criminals. Death Note originated in a Japanese manga, but the Netflix movie is not the first time it has been adapted to another medium: It has been remade into an anime TV series, video games, several live-action Japanese films and even a musical.

5 Things Wrong With The Netflix Death Note Movie

The original manga series Death Note , written and illustrated by Tsugumi Ohba, has been adapted many times over since its release in There have been anime series, video games, novelizations, mini-series, and, finally, movies. The newest Death Note adaptation from Netflix is a brand new take on the material, and fans who want to compare the new Death Note movie versus the comics will definitely be surprised by the liberties taken in the newest take. Netflix's live action Death Note movie is not just an adaptation of the manga, but, to quote Lakeith Stanfield , who has a supporting role in the film playing the detective L and recently spoke to Bustle about the movie, it's a "re-imagining. Specifically, the film keeps the same main characters from the original manga. Like the manga, Death Note follows Light Nat Wolff , a teenager who finds the Death Note, a magical book that allows the owner to kill at will. Ryuk, the demon who comes with the book, also makes an appearance, as does Light's love interest Mia named Misa in the manga.

Actor Lakeith Stanfield wasn't familiar with the world of Death Note when he was cast as the enigmatic L in Netflix's English-language.

Whitewashing Boycott Confuses Japanese 'Death Note' Fans

My notes on the Japanese live-action Death Note franchise. Criminals are mysteriously dropping dead of heart attacks, mostly after escaping official punishment — but some while behind bars. The Tokyo police, led by Souichoro Yagami Takeshi Kaga , theorise that the deaths are unnatural, the work of a mystery man nick-named Kira Killer?

An adaptation, at its best, should also be an interpretation. It should offer a personal take, a new angle, deepening certain themes while naturally reducing others, etc. However, the decisions made when radically altering source material should feel purposeful, not arbitrary and random. The book says Death Note on the cover and has names written in it over centuries. It also has the rules. In the movie, Light writes a name and a manner of death and it unfolds in front of his eyes.
