In Defence of Congratulations: Why Evangelion Never Needed Another Ending

The End of Evangelion is a movie based on the Evangelion series that acts as a retelling of the final two episodes of the original series. The first half of The End of Evangelion is essentially the last 25 minutes of the previous Evangelion movie released, Death and Rebirth , although there are some minor details that were edited. When compared to the original ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion , End of Evangelion is arguably the more grounded of the two, though it still has more than its fair share of philosophy, psychology, and existentialism. This movie was originally released on July 19th, in Japan. After the strange and unorthodox finale of Neon Genesis Evangelion , many fans and critics were left either confused or disappointed. This lead to Studio GAINAX eventually greenlighting a movie project that was supposed to have a complete ending but was cut short due to time constraints and budgeting. As a result, two films ended up being made, the first being Evangelion: Death and Rebirth and the second being The End of Evangelion.

The Beginning and the End, or 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door': Directed by Hideaki Anno, Masayuki, Kazuya Tsurumaki. With Megumi Ogata, Spike Spencer.

The End of Evangelion

This review spoils the film extensively. Content warning: While according to IMDb this movie is rated TV, it depicts nudity and blatant sexual imagery, along with an amount of violence and gore that feels a little excessive for that rating. Watch at your own discretion. Shinji Ikari is a young pilot for a secret international program called NERV, designed to protect the world from the impending Third Impact, a cataclysmic event involving transcendent aliens that humanity has no confidence in surviving if it ever occurred. Shinji is one of three pilots in this program. The movie picks up shortly after the end of the series, where Shinji killed the last of the Angels—the beings that would be responsible for the third impact—and saved his friends, as well as realized his place in the world and his desire for life. The film immediately takes the positive ending of the series and corkscrews it into something unrecognizable. This provokes Gendo to bring Rei to an even more secret chamber beneath NERV headquarters, where another transcendent being called Adam stands crucified. This action unintentionally triggers the Third Impact, as Rei merges with Adam and transcends into a new ultimate being.

End of Evangelion

Alongside the production issues that plagued the final episodes, certain sections of the fanbase regarded it as a cop-out ending and a disappointing conclusion to an otherwise fantastic series. Of course, some even took it upon themselves to teach Studio GAINAX a lesson, defacing the studio with graffiti and sending death threats to the staff and the director, Hideaki Anno. In , several months after the finale of the TV anime, Evangelion came to movie theaters under the title Death and Rebirth. This was originally intended to be the entire film, but was not completed on time. Nevertheless, it would not go to waste. On 19 July , The End of Evangelion hit theaters.

Hideaki Anno: After Evangelion

Evangelion is set fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm, particularly in the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo The protagonist is Shinji Ikari, a teenage boy who was recruited by his father Gendo to the shadowy organization Nerv to pilot a giant bio-machine mecha named "Evangelion" into combat against beings known as "Angels". The series explores the experiences and emotions of Evangelion pilots and members of Nerv as they try to prevent Angels from causing more cataclysms. In the process, they are called upon to understand the ultimate causes of events and the motives for human action. The series has been described as a deconstruction of the mecha genre[5] and it features archetypal imagery derived from Shinto cosmology as well as Jewish and Christian mystical traditions, including Midrashic tales and Kabbalah.

When we left Anno, he was constructing the foundations of Neon Genesis Evangelion with his team over at Gainax, appearing to be pulling himself out of his debilitating depression to return to the forefront of anime. However, not everything is as cut-and-dried as all that, as the process of making Evangelion was an exhausting roller coaster of technical compromises and on-the-fly creative decisions. These challenges among numerous others further strained Anno's mental health, the primary source from which the main cast's characterization and obstacles were created and refined. However, these also were the factors that would slingshot the series into international acclaim.

The Beginning and the End, or 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'

In fact, Shinji makes this thing damn near unwatchable. I absolutely hate Shinji. So what this film is, is it is an alternate ending to the shitty ending that the television series gave us.
