When you think of the founding studios of modern CG animation, Pixar and DreamWorks Animation immediately come to mind. But for 34 years, Blue Sky Studios was also part of that vanguard of technology and creativity, operating as both a pioneer and an outlier in the computer animation world. The six-short series is a bittersweet swan song for Blue Sky Studios, as it features Scrat, the tunnel-visioned, saber-toothed squirrel who opened their very first film, Ice Age , and now brings the creative entity to its close. Since the close of Blue Sky Studios happened so quickly, Paste reached out to the creative team behind Ice Age: Scrat Tales —including Chris Wedge, Anthony Nisi and Michael Knapp—to get the full story of how this Scrat-focused entry, which was supposed to signify a new chapter for the company, became its coda. Co-founded in by a collective of tech orphans after the shut down of MAGI, an early computer visual effects company that worked on Tron , Blue Sky Studios was conceived to be a turnkey operation that would produce creative visuals for their clients in-house, using their proprietary software CGI Studio. They retained the creative team and had them build complex VFX shots for a host of Fox movies.

Scrat 'Finally Got His Nut': Closed Studio Posts 'Ice Age's' Triumphant End
Same story as always: global catastrophe threatens Sid, Manny and Diego and they have to get to safety. It manages to be relatively fresh, thanks to the increased amount of time given to accident-prone Scrat and his Tex Avery-ish antics in defence of his giant acorn; surely the lovable rodent has earned his own franchise.
Still struggling to avoid extinction, Ice Age buddies Sid, Manny and Diego encounter teenage mammoths desperate for independence, shifting continental plates and a gang of unusual pirates in the fourth instalment from the franchise. Enjoyable follow-up to the Canadian animated feature. Larry Sanders and Simpsons scribe Jon Vitti picks up the writing reins with aplomb as Manfred, Sid and Diego face their biggest challenge to date — the end of the Ice Age. There's a faint air of cynicism in this story of a morose mammoth, a bumbling sloth and a wily tiger who join forces, despite all their better instincts, to return a human baby to his father.

I came to scoff and stayed to smile. I confess the premise did not inspire me: A woolly mammoth, a sabertooth tiger and a sloth team up to rescue a human baby and return it to its parents. Uh, huh. But Peter Ackerman's screenplay is sly and literate, and director Chris Wedge's visual style so distinctive and appealing that the movie seduced me. The film takes place during a southward migration of species during a great ice age. Such migrations took place over millennia and were not the pre-Cambrian equivalent of going to Florida for the winter months, but no matter: As the ice packs advance, the animals retreat. There is no time to lose.
